Kerecsendi Berek-erdő (Szentélyerdő)
A Berek-erdőhöz hasonló tatárjuharos–lösztölgyeseket (hegylábi zárt erdőssztyepp–tölgyeseket) az országban szinte mindenhol felszámoltuk a tájhasználat során, mivel termőhelyük növénytermesztésre és állattartásra is kiválóan alkalmas. Az itteni állomány megmenekülésének kulcsa az volt, hogy az egri érsekség fácános vadászterületeként szolgált a 18. századtól egészen a II. világháború végéig. Az államosítások utáni évtizedben a neves hazai botanikus, Zólyomi Bálint felismerte az erdőtömb tájtörténeti és természetvédelmi jelentőségét, amely nagyon korán védettséget kapott. Az erdő tájtörténetéről, növény- és állatvilágáról jól összeszedett leírás található a Bükki Nemzeti Park Igazgatóság honlapján.
A Berek-erdővel kapcsolatban szót kell ejteni az erdő folyamatos, dinamikus átalakulásáról, amiben egyszerre játszanak szerepet a természetes szukcessziós folyamatok, az erdőgazdálkodás progresszív – többek között Pro Silva-szemléletű – átállítása, illetve legújabban a tisztán természetvédelmi célú erdőkezelés. Ez a szentélyerdő a LIFE4OakForests projektnek is mintaterülete, ahol célzott beavatkozásokat hajtanak végre a nemzetipark-igazgatóság szakemberei. Bár az Országos Erdőállomány Adattár alapján itt nincsenek koros fák, az egyéb kiválasztási szempontok, mint a magas fokú természetesség, a ritka fajok jelenléte, a kiemelkedő táji érték egyértelműen biztosítják a Berek-erdő helyét a Szentélyerdők országos listáján.

- A megállótól délnyugat felé induljunk el, és a P jelzést kövessük. Kb. 800 méter után jobbra fordulva térjünk le a turistaútról a kelet felé forduló, jelzetlen útra (1,4 km, 19 m szintemelkedés).
