In der hügeligen Landschaft des Allgäuer Alpenvorlandes liegt Speiden mit seiner weithin berühmten Gnadenkapelle und Wallfahrtskirche Maria Hilf.
Der Ursprung der Wallfahrt geht auf den Dreißigjährigen Krieg zurück. Neben einem Gebetsstock mit dem Gnadenbild der Gottesmutter als Helferin in der Not wurde 1635/36 eine Kapelle erbaut, während dessen Bauzeit sich die erste Gebetserhörung ereignete. In den folgenden 20 Jahren sind 156 Wunder im Zellere "Miracelbuch" verzeichnet. Bis heute werden viele Erhörungen und Heilungen bezeugt. Die kleine Gnadenkapelle wurde schnell zu klein und so wurde bereits 1644 nebenan mit dem Bau der Wallfahrtskirche begonnen. Mehrere Umbauten und Sanierungen bis 1783 formten die Optik, die 1966 – 69 wieder hergestellt wurde, der heute so bekannten Maria-Hilfer Wallfahrtskirche. Das Gnadenbild der Mutter Gottes, das wohl bereits aus dem Jahr 1520 stammt, steht seit der Renovierung 1966 wieder in der Kapelle.
