1409 ließen Herzog Ulrich von Teck und seine Gemahlin Anna von Polen eine gotische Basilika errichten und erhoben sie zur Pfarrkirche der Stadt.
Ab 1712 barocker Neubau von Schiff und Chor unter Baumeister Valerian Brenner, 1862 bis 1865 neuromanische Ausgestaltung, die im 20. Jh. wieder entfernt wurde. Das Hochaltarretabel mit der Vision und dem Martyrium des Hl. Stephanus wurde 1962 von Erwin Holzbaur geschaffen. In der Turmkapelle und in der nördlichen Chorkapelle befinden sich bedeutende Epitaphien, so die Sandsteingrabplatte der Anna von Polen und das Rotmarmorgrabmal Herzog Ulrichs von Teck mit seiner zweiten Gemahlin Ursula von Baden.
