The pilgrimage chapel, reconstructed in 1990, has stood on the Michelsberg, first mentioned in 1155, since the 12th century and offers views of the graduation building, town and Palatinate Forest.
The largest wine festival in the world, the Dürkheim sausage market, has its origins here in the tasting of ‘Weck, Worschd und Woi’ (bacon, sausage and wine) for pilgrims in honour of Saint Michael. When it became too crowded for the stalls on the hill, the church fathers moved the market to the Brühlwiesen, where it is still held today as the ‘Dergemer Worschdmarkt’.
