Wine hike: Kallstadt - Roman winery Weilberg - Bad Dürkheim
Short description:
A very scenic and varied route through the vineyards between Kallstadt and Bad Dürkheim. Along the way are the remains of the Roman winery Weilberg in the south of Kallstadt and the Michaelskapelle chapel, historical witnesses of different eras, and with the Dürkheim giant barrel one of the quirkiest attractions in the region.
Scenic circular hike through the vineyards on the edge of the Palatinate Forest. There are no significant ascents along the way. The paths are partly natural, but mostly paved.
The route is not separately signposted.
Author’s recommendation
After the hike, the varied Kallstadt gastronomy is open for refreshment.

Safety information
The route runs mainly on so-called agricultural paths. These serve agricultural use and are used throughout the year by tractors and harvesters. We point out that use of the paths is at your own risk and ask for mutual consideration in the interest of all. The agricultural paths can be soiled by agricultural traffic. After rainy days and especially in winter, the paths can be wet and slippery.Tips and suggestions

Roadbook
From the Platz der 100 Weine, opposite St. Salvator Church, walk along Leistadter Straße to the edge of town, where you turn left into Backhausgasse. You are on the Riesling hiking trail (blue stele with yellow wine glass). Follow this around the small lake, up the hill. Here you will already see the excavation site "Villa am Weilberg." You walk in a left curve towards the Roman winery and above the excavation site continue to the right heading west with a view of the Palatinate Forest. You cross the street (Caution: no crossing aid) and continue straight past the Hotel/Restaurant Annaberg (possibility to stop for food and drink).
You are now on the Bad Dürkheim circular trail "Pfalz Wein Pfade Pfälzerwald - Spielbergblick" (marking: trail logo with amphora). Follow this to the Dürkheim Sausage Market square with the giant barrel and the saltworks.
On the way back, use the pedestrian crossing at the roundabout and walk past the gas station, then left up the hill to the Michaelskapelle chapel.
The marking leads you over the Michaelskapelle with steady but moderate ups and downs northwards also back. Shortly after the path meets the street, turn right and reach the Roman wine press and then again the Roman villa, this time from below. Turn left to the excavation site uphill and meet the junction of the path that led you from Kallstadt. Return follows the same route via Kallstadt lake and Backhausgasse to the starting point, the tourist information at the Platz der 100 Weine.
