A fatörzslenyomat-barlangok eltérő eredetű geológiai folyamatok hatására alakulnak ki, de minden esetben különböző típusú kőzetekbe beágyazódott, nagyméretű fatörzsek elbomlása után visszamaradt, ember által járható üregekről van szó. Ezeket a különleges, ún. pszeudokarsztos természeti jelenségeket eddig leginkább csak pár országból írták le (Románia, Japán, Szlovákia, Magyarország, USA), a vulkáni eredetű Görgényi- és Kelemen-havasok által közrefogott erdélyi Maros-szorosban jelenleg már 70 tagot számláló barlang együttes pedig éppenséggel Európa-bajnoknak számít ebben a műfajban (az egységnyi területre vetített lelőhelyek számának szempontjából).
A könnyen megközelíthető, lényegében az Ipolytarnóc melletti geológiai bemutatóhely (Borókás-árok) feletti hegygerinc túloldalán, már éppen Szlovákiában található Mucsényi-barlang is ebbe az előkelő geológiai klubba tartozik. A barlang kialakulásának története kb. 19-20 millió évvel ezelőtt kezdődött, amikor is egy kidőlt, feltehetőleg tűleveles fát egy akkoriban működő vulkán hamuja befedett (ez lett a jelenlegi befogadó kőzet, a riodácit tufa). A fatörzs elszenesedett, majd évmilliókkal később, amikor a Mucsényi-patak bevágódása lehetővé tette a levegővel való érintkezését, szép lassan kimállott a fa szerves anyaga. Az így keletkezett üreg a riodácit tufa elaprózódása folytán később tovább tágult, de alapvetően megőrizte a fatörzs eredeti alakját.
A barlangot egyetlen, kb. 12 m hosszú, 2,5 m széles és 1,5 m magas vízszintes járat képezi, amelynek falán több helyütt is felfedezhetünk elszenesedett famaradványokat.

- A Losonc (Lučenec) irányából érkező távolsági buszok első megállója Mucsényben (Mučín) pont a barlanghoz vezető tansövény kezdeténél, a Völgy utcánál található.
Directions
- A barlang a szlovákiai Mucsény (Mučín) településről egy 2,7 km-es könnyű túra során közelíthető meg legegyszerűbben (115 m szint felfele a barlangig). A településről a főútról nyíló Völgyiho utcán (ulica) kell kigyalogolnunk, követve a barlanghoz vezető tanösvény jelét (fehér négyzet zöld sávval átlósan áthúzva), amely végig jól követhető módon vezet bennünket először egy patakvölgyben, majd abból kikapaszkodva fel a barlanghoz.
