Das Gebäude stammt aus dem Jahr 1675 und wurde 1892 von der Stadtgemeinde angekauft.

Seitdem war hier die Freiwillige Feuerwehr untergebracht. In den 1960ern wurde an der Umfahrungsstraße das neue Rüsthaus gebaut und die Feuerwehr zog dorthin.
Seit den 80ern befindet sich hier das Studio des vielfach ausgezeichneten Fotografen Ernst Gutschi.
