Palkonya kicsiny, 282 fős faluja nem sokat változott az elmúlt száz évben, ma is őrzi a XVIII. században betelepített német szőlőművesek kultúráját. Már a XVII. század végi feljegyzések is szólnak arról, hogy errefelé jó fekete szőlő terem.
A falu épületeinek fele védett, népi építészeti műemlék. Ezek közül is kiemelkedik a Palkonya déli határában lévő pincesor, mely ritka népi építészeti épületegyüttesként gyönyörűen fennmaradt.
Az 53 épület nagyjából egyforma, négyzetes alaprajzú présházból, egyhelyiséges munkaépületből áll, melyből téglaboltozatos pince vezet merőlegesen a domboldalba. A jellegzetesen a domboldalra merőleges tetővonalú épületek mellett megtalálhatóak a keresztbe forduló, íves boltozású, tornácos présházak is.
A présházak egy része ma már turizmusra, borkóstolásokra, borvacsorákra van berendezkedve. Ezekre érdemes előzetesen bejelentkezni, de a szőlősgazdák is szívesen körbevezetnek bárkit a pincéjükben, és nem fogják elmulasztani a kínálást sem.
