Siklóson a vártól pár perc sétára, a dzsámitól alig néhány lépésre egy különleges egyházi-építészettörténeti emlék várja a látogatókat: a szerb ortodox templom.

A siklósi szerbség története a 16. században kezdődött, ekkor tűnt fel a montenegrói származású Stefan Stiljanovity, aki a török uralmat megelőzően az utolsó szerb despotaként és Ferdinánd király híveként számos csatában harcolt a hódítók ellen. Azonban az oszmán seregeknek nem tudott ellenállni, és Valpó várának elvesztése után vonult vissza Siklósra.

Itt is halt meg 1543-ban, majd röviddel ezután a vár török kézre került, az oszmán katonák pedig egy este Stiljanovity sírjának helyén fényeket láttak. Elrejtett kincs reményében kutatni kezdtek a sírhely környékén, ám elásott kincs helyett egy illatos, teljesen ép holttestet találtak. Minderről értesültek a šišatovaci kolostorban is, ahonnan hamar követeket menesztettek Siklósra, és a törökök illő „megajándékozását” követően a kolostorba szállították a holttestet, majd egy évvel később szentté avatták Stefan Stiljanovityot. (Feleségét, Helenát szintén szentként tisztelik, a hagyomány szerint ő alapította a szerémségi Petkovica kolostort.)

A "siklósi Szent Istvánnal" együtt érkeztek tehát azok a szerbek a környékre, akik számára előző, 1738-ban emelt templomuk leégését követően 1806-ban épült meg a ma látható Szent Demeter-templom, melynek kertjében sírhely emlékeztet az ortodox egyház szentjére. Maga a templom egy copf stílusú épület, melyet kőkerítés választ el az utcától.

Hatalmas, díszes ikonosztáza (mely mögé csak az arra jogosult egyházi személyek léphetnek be) 1836-ban készült, 2018-ban restaurálták, így ma ismét régi fényében ragyog. Istentiszteletet évi 3-4 alkalommal tartanak, amelyeket elsősorban a helyben élő 50-60 szerb látogat.
