The Schöckl (1,445 m) rises about 1,100 m above the state capital of Graz and is considered Graz’s quintessential local mountain. With its vast expanse, it offers many recreational opportunities, and thanks to its abundant forests, it also provides ideal conditions as a local recreation area. This freestanding mountain, composed of limestone, rises directly at the edge of the Alps and offers a spectacular panoramic view over large parts of southeastern Austria and the neighboring regions.
In 1872, the Styrian Mountaineering Association (St.G.V.) built the first mountain hut on the Jahnwiese. Soon afterward, the association decided to build a new, more spacious mountain hut. Following a land swap with Count Stubenberg on September 14, 1890, the hut was constructed and opened on the south side of the summit, visible from Graz. This location was a prerequisite for the financial support provided by the City of Graz. On the occasion of its 100th anniversary (1990), the Stubenberghaus became the first ÖAV mountain hut (and the second mountain hut in Austria after the Berliner Hütte) to be designated a historic landmark. In 2000–2001, a complete renovation was carried out with the support of numerous sponsors. In 2015, the Graz Section celebrated the 125th anniversary of this landmark on the Schöckl and published an informative commemorative booklet for the occasion. In 2019, the roof was renovated and re-shingled with wooden shingles.
