The Treaty of Saint-Germain in 1919 and the resulting redrawing of the border ultimately spelled the end for the Pforzheim Hut, which subsequently served as a post for Italian border guards and customs officers. Later, the building served as an alpine base for the Milan Section of the CAI, and the Pforzheim Hut was renamed Rifugio Rasass.
In 1964, the interior of the building was destroyed by fire. In 1998, the Italian government returned the approximately 36-square-meter hut from the OeAV and DAV to the Autonomous Province of South Tyrol, and the Old Pforzheim Hut was designated a historic landmark in 2009. Starting in 2009, the “CUNFIN” support association undertook extensive restoration and renovation of the hut, which had been left to decay. The CUNFIN association in Mals is converting the basement of this historically significant, protected high-alpine building into a museum. On September 20, 2015, the first exhibition, “Duty-Free Zone!?”—focused on smuggling—took place. The exhibition, held at an altitude of 2,256 meters, marked the beginning of the hut’s future use as a venue for art, culture, and history.
In 2024, the Forum Prävention in Bolzano leased the hut, opening a new chapter for the Alte Pforzheimer Hütte. The plan is to offer a sociocultural program for young people in South Tyrol and the surrounding area. The Youth Department of Forum Prävention will take over management of the newly renovated self-catering hut.
