Der Gamskarkogel gilt als der höchste Grasberg Europas, die Gamskarkogelhütte selbst gilt als eine der ältesten, rein zu bergsteigerischen Zwecken errichteten Schutzhütte der Ostalpen bzw. sogar Europas. Im ältesten Teil befindet sich heute die Küche. Bereits 1828 hat Erzherzog-Johann diese Hütte errichten lassen.
