The path to the Harbachalm leads mostly through the forest on a forest road. You will pass the Tofern chapel. The Harbachalm is an old miner’s hut from the 17th century. The entire Tofern area, as well as the Reitalm area, were formerly used for copper mining. The Tofern area is especially known for its abundant growth of yellow and spotted gentians (commonly called “Enzianwurz” locally), whose roots have special healing effects on stomach and intestinal ailments and are strictly protected. Long ago, the "Wurzenzwerg von der Tofern" is said to have lived in this area. This was a small goblin that could make itself invisible except for its nose, which remained visible and was a gentian root. Even today, the Wurzenzwerg is said to care for the gentian roots.

The path continues via the Tofernalm (not managed) to the Tofernscharte, from where you have a magnificent view of Bad Gastein, and further to the Gamskarkogel, the highest grass mountain in Europe. The view from the Gamskarkogel has gained worldwide fame. It extends over the entire range of the High Tauern and the northernmost limestone Alps, from the Wilder Kaiser to the Dachstein. And the best part: there is a serviced hut directly on the summit. At the Gamskarkogel hut (= Bad Gasteiner hut), you will be treated to delicacies. This alpine club hut is one of the oldest shelters in the entire Alpine region. The hut was built in 1828 by Archduke Johann and also offers overnight accommodations.
