Vienna is the federal capital of Austria and also one of the nine federal states. It lies on the Danube, on the eastern edge of the Alps, and impresses not only culturally, but also with its unique flora. There are many hiking trails around Vienna that bring hiking enthusiasts closer to the city and the countryside - and if you are hungry after a tour of Vienna, stop off at a wine tavern and experience typical Viennese hospitality.

Hiking on Vienna's city hiking trails

Anyone who thinks that the city of Vienna and the surrounding area is not good for hiking due to the lack of high mountains is mistaken. Thanks to its location next to the Vienna Woods and the Danube, there are many beautiful hiking trails. The 14 city hiking trails are among the most popular. Hiking fans can explore Vienna and experience the amazingly varied landscape on the well-signposted hiking trails directly in Vienna and the surrounding area. The starting points of all trails are accessible by public transport - and if you fancy a break, you can stop off at one of Vienna's famous wine taverns and have a good time.

Hike once around Vienna on the rundumadum hiking trail

If you want to experience all the facets of the Vienna region, we recommend the rundumadum trail. This takes you on 24 stages over 120 kilometres around Vienna. You can experience the hilly Vienna Woods, the rustic Bisamberg and the beautiful floodplain landscape in the Lobau. The stages are between three and ten kilometres long and easily accessible by public transport, allowing hiking fans of all ages to get to know Vienna from a whole new perspective.

Excursions in the Vienna Woods

What makes Vienna so special is its location in the Vienna Woods. Wonderful hikes can be experienced here. Numerous hiking trails lead through beech and pine forests, up to ancient ruins and viewing towers. Food and drink are available in cosy mountain huts, of which there are many. If you want to get a view of the entire area, hike up the Schöpfl, the highest point in the Vienna Woods at 893 metres. The best thing to do, however, is to take a look at our guide page for the Vienna Woods, where countless inspiring tours are described.

Interesting facts about Vienna

  • Where does the city of Vienna get its name from?
The name Vienna probably goes back to Wenia and thus to the Celto-Roman Vedunia. The word refers to a forest stream, meaning the Vienna River. If Vindobona immediately came to mind - wrong: the city's name comes from the river of the same name, Vienna.
  • How many people live in Vienna?
At the end of 2022, 1,939,683 people lived in Vienna.
  • How do you say goodbye in Vienna?
The Viennese way of saying goodbye is quite similar to the German way, with one small difference: instead of "Auf Wiedersehen", people in Vienna say "Auf Wiederschaun" or "Wiederschaun" for short. Friends usually say "Baba", which is pronounced "Babaaa".
