Riparian forests, two rivers, and a charming town worth seeingThis tour offers a lot of interesting sights on just eleven kilometers: beautiful, quiet paths along the Isar, then the confluence of the Amper, which ends near Volkmannsdorf after its 168 km long journey from the Oberammergau spring pots as the largest tributary of the Isar. The return route goes through the Isar riparian forests and along small tributaries. The tour concludes with a stroll through the old town of Moosburg, whose favorable location on the peninsula between the Amper and Isar has been valued by people as a settlement site since ancient times. There are important sights to visit such as the Kastulus Minster and its Leinberger altar, but wandering past picturesque rows of houses and taking a generous break with food, drink, or ice cream are already worth a visit.

Considered the gateway to the Hallertau region, Moosburg is nestled between the floodplains of the Isar and Amper rivers, at the transition to the rolling hills of southern Hallertau: It is the oldest town in the Freising district and, in addition to a very beautiful old town, offers wonderful hiking terrain. In 2019, the riverbank reinforcement structures near Moosburg were removed to allow the Isar to develop naturally once again. So today, we set out to explore the magnificent floodplains of the Isar and Amper. > Our loop hike begins at the Viehmarkt parking lot 01. We first follow Viehmarktstraße southward along the parking lot, but quickly turn left onto Landshuter Straße, which takes us parallel to State Route 2350 to Isarlände 02. Here we head up onto the Dammweg, which quickly leads us into the forest. The beautiful, wide path takes us north for a good three-quarters of an hour through the magnificent floodplain forest of the Isar. Just before our path joins a cross-path, we turn right onto a trail. Shortly thereafter, we follow this very cross-path a few meters further to the next junction. We turn left and, shortly after, cross a stone bridge 03. The wide path soon takes us along between the Isar and the Amper until, after just under a quarter of an hour, we reach the Amper breakthrough 04. It’s best to climb the stairs up to the bridge; from above, a completely different, magnificent view of the confluence of the Amper and Isar opens up. We return to the wide cross-path after the stone bridge 03 and follow it to the right. After walking straight ahead for ten minutes, we turn right at the wastewater treatment plant. We follow the road to its end and then turn right again onto a narrower road that crosses the Mühlbach 05, which flows into the Amper shortly thereafter. The path soon takes us under the railroad tracks. On the other side, we follow the tracks along a barely traveled, paved path. After a quarter of an hour, the road curves to the right; a few minutes later, we arrive at an intersection with a memorial cross 06. To our right, a bridge spans the Amper. Thalbacher Straße branches off to the left. We continue straight ahead. Initially still paved, the path gradually turns into a gravel path. It passes under State Route 2085 and runs more or less parallel to the Amper River. At the hydroelectric power plant 07 on the opposite bank, it crosses a small bridge and joins a narrow trail. We follow the river for a good kilometer along a trail that is heavily overgrown in places. Toward the end, we emerge from the bushes, walk briefly along a meadow, and pass a barn. Then we come to a small road. To the right, it crosses the Amper; on the other side of the road is a rest bench 08. We follow the road to the left. Shortly before the state highway, the road takes us on a left turn and then a right turn, leading us over the bike and pedestrian path and under the highway itself. Now we follow Georg-Schweiger-Straße straight ahead. After ten minutes, we cross the railroad tracks and continue along Bahnhofstraße into the center of Moosburg an der Isar. In the center, we keep to the left on Georg-Hummel-Straße and turn left again at the Marian Column toward Stadtplatz and the parish church of St. Kastulus 09, which is well worth seeing. We take a narrow footpath that runs between St. Johannes Church and the parish church. We descend a few flights of stairs, turn right, and immediately after that, at the Moosburg Local History Museum, turn right again. We climb the stairs back up and then cross Kastulusplatz. This brings us to Benefiziat-Weber-Weg, and with one final right turn, we’ve circled the parish church once. We follow a few more steps down to Leinbergstraße, cross it diagonally to the left, and walk through a small park to Stadtgraben. This street takes us to the right onto Viehmarktstraße, along which we stroll back to Viehmarkt Parking Lot 01.
