Today, our tour takes us to one of the most important pilgrimage sites in the Hallertau region. St. Alban was built shortly before 1500 by a master builder from Landshut. The three nearly life-size statues of saints on the wall behind the altar—created around the time of the church’s founding and depicting Saints Alban, Florian, and Ulrich—are particularly impressive. After visiting the pilgrimage site, we’ll wander through beautiful forests and small hamlets around Hörgertshausen. At the end of the hike, we can pay a quick visit to the local history museum. Guided tours are available by appointment. > We start in Hörgertshausen 01, below the church on Kirchstraße. At the main road, we turn right, pass the bus stop, and turn left at the next opportunity. We’ll pass the local history museum and, immediately afterward, turn right onto Hochfeldstraße, heading uphill through the residential area. At the edge of town, we turn right onto the gravel path. We walk past a few hop fields, and after just a few minutes, we reach the outskirts of St. Alban 02. After a brief visit to the pilgrimage church, we follow the dirt path next to the church out into the fields. The wide gravel path quickly leads us straight into the forest. Here, after a short climb, we follow the forest trail straight ahead at the fork. Immediately afterward, we stay on the main path at the next fork, which leads us down through the forest and then back up again. At the T-junction, we turn right. The forest trail takes us to a small road, which we follow briefly to the left. Immediately afterward, we turn right onto a dirt path leading uphill. We pass a pond ( 03) with a bench, then reach a farmstead. We turn left, walk past the buildings, and soon find ourselves on a small road. We follow it to the left until we reach the country road, cross it straight ahead, and after about 50 meters, turn right onto a dirt path. Passing by fields, we now head straight toward the forest. We keep going straight ahead, pass through a small section of forest on the way up, and then continue along a field and meadow path to a gravel road. To our right, we see the hamlet of Sammetsreith. However, we turn left, walk a few meters to the next T-intersection 04 with a tree in the middle. Here we keep to the right and soon walk along a paved path to Margarethenried. In the center of town, we briefly visit the pretty St. Margaretha Church 05, then continue on to the country road. We turn right and walk out of town. Shortly after the last house, a dirt path branches off to the left. We follow it to the forest. A few meters after entering the forest, the path forks: We continue straight ahead, walking just a few minutes through the forest and then past a pond and meadows. At the next intersection 06, we continue straight ahead on our path and re-enter the forest. Our route takes us to the edge of the forest. Here, we turn right and climb up a meadow path along the forest edge. After a few minutes, it curves to the right and, from here on, leads us back into the forest as a gravel forest trail. At the next intersection, we turn left, hike a short distance through the sparse forest, and then enjoy a lovely walk along the forest edge and on across the fields. At a narrow, paved road, we turn right. Walking along the fence of a game reserve 07, we reach a small T-intersection, where we follow the road down to the right, continuing along the game reserve. After a few hundred meters, we keep to the right again at the fork in the road. At the edge of town, the route leads us to the left, along Eichenstraße to Bergstraße. Turning right, it’s just a few steps back to the parking lot at the church in Hörgertshausen 01.

Today we’re exploring the hills and forests around the small town of Mauern at the entrance to the Hallertau region. Mauern was first mentioned in historical records over 1,100 years ago and has a long tradition and history. The Hofmarkschloss passed through the hands of many noble families until it was sold to the municipality in 2001. A historic hiking trail runs through the village, commemorating historical events and archaeological sites. We’ll be exploring a small section of it today as well. > We’ll start at the parking lot by Hofmarkschloss 01 and first walk along the stream out of the village. The signs for the historic hiking trail direct us to the right over the bridge and then onto a gravel path. After the next stone bridge, we turn right onto a meadow path and follow the Mauerner Bach 02 to an information sign at the end of the meadow. We turn left into the forest; immediately afterward, we keep to the right onto the forest trail through a beautiful section of woodland. A clearly visible forest trail leads us along above the stream a short while later. We reach the hamlet of Bergmühle 03 and make a sharp 180° left turn. The trail begins to climb; at the next fork, we keep left. Then we continue straight ahead, passing a junction straight ahead after a few minutes and following the trail as it climbs again. We walk through a beautiful pine forest for a few more minutes before reaching the edge of a field. We turn right and walk along the edge of the forest and fields, enjoying beautiful views, until we reach a large estate. We turn left, pass a small Marian chapel 04, and then continue straight ahead between meadows and fields. After about 600 meters, a path branches off to the right. We follow it into the forest. After two minutes, it curves to the right; shortly afterward, it leads us along the edge of the forest to a trail junction. We cross the trail diagonally to the left. For about 100 meters, we follow the route as it curves to the right, briefly along the forest edge, and back into the woods. Shortly afterward, the path curves left again and ends after a few minutes at a small road. We follow it uphill to the right and, opposite a wayside shrine 05, turn left onto a gravel path. A beautiful path now leads us past birch trees. At the fork by the digital radio tower 06, we take the right path along the edge of the forest, though still within the woods. Beautiful birch trees continue to line our path. At the edge of the forest, when the Föhn wind is blowing, we catch magnificent views of the Alps. Then the trail heads down to the left, past a newly built hunting blind. Winding up and down, the trail now leads us back into the sparse forest in a left curve. Shortly afterward, a grassy path branches off to the right, descending across a cleared area. It winds gently to the right, descending to a wider forest path next to a game reserve. We turn right, walk across the Mühlbach Bridge 07 and past a farmstead onto a paved path that ends at the main road in Mauern. We follow it to the right, turn left at the roundabout, and continue straight ahead on Am Sportpark. We cross Schulstraße diagonally to the left, and just before the town limits, we turn left onto Hofmarkring. Immediately afterward, the path climbs up a dirt road between the houses. At the top, we have a great view over Mauern 08. On the historic hiking trail, we continue straight across the street and along the edge of town. At the information sign about sunken paths, turn left and stroll back into town. Finally, walk back via Eichelberg and Bergstraße to City Hall and the parking lot at Hofmarkschloss 01.

The loop around Nandlstadt treats us to beautiful stretches of forest, especially during the first half of the hike. Along the way, we have the chance to take a short break on wooden benches that have been placed in some truly picturesque spots. To round out the hike, we’ll visit the Brünnl Chapel, a pretty Marian pilgrimage chapel near Baumgarten.> From St. Martin’s Church 01, we’ll walk north along Pfarrer-Leibig-Straße. At the main road, we turn right and continue out of town. After the supermarket, we turn right onto Weingartenstraße; shortly after that, we keep to the left onto a gravel path. It quickly turns into a grassy path and leads us past paddocks. The path ends at a small paved road, which we follow to the right. The path goes uphill, past a solitary farmstead with a wayside shrine 02 and a bench, and straight ahead onto a dirt road. At the next crossroads, we turn left and head out into the fields. After about ten minutes, we enter the beautiful forest via a well-defined forest trail. The route takes us straight through a magnificent stretch of woods. After a few minutes, we pass a cleared area; immediately afterward, we keep to the right at the fork in the trail. After just 50 meters, we turn right onto an inconspicuous forest path 03. It’s hard to make out at first, but becomes clearer as we go. It leads us straight through the forest, sometimes downhill and then uphill again. Ten minutes later, we emerge from the forest. We follow a paved path past a brick pigsty and, immediately afterward, turn right at the farm onto a small paved road leading downhill. At the next intersection, we turn left toward Zeilhof. Shortly after Zeilhof, we stay on the little road and pass the grass track racecourse 04 on our right. At the next farm, the road turns right, but we continue straight ahead, passing between the houses and up a dirt road. We walk for a good ten minutes along the edge of the Albaner Holz forest and past a few fields, then we come to a fork in the trail marked by a magnificent linden tree with a bench and wayside shrine 05. We keep to the right, and just a few minutes later, at the next fork, we turn right again onto a path through the woods and meadows. Passing pastures, we reach the forest shortly afterward and head straight into it. A beautiful forest path now leads us through the magnificent woods; we stay on the main path the entire time until, after a quarter of an hour, we reach the edge of the forest at a large clearing 06. We turn left, walk briefly across a meadow, and then turn right again, continuing along the edge of the forest for a short distance until we reach a small concrete road. We follow it to the right, turn left immediately afterward onto the gravel path, and just a few meters later turn right again, heading uphill onto a beautiful forest path. At the next fork in the trail in a clearing, we continue straight ahead; immediately afterward, as the path curves to the left, we take a right-hand branch onto a narrower forest path 07. The path leads us through the Große Holz to a slightly wider forest road. We follow this great path to the right, out of the forest and across the fields, from where we can already see the church in Baumgarten. At the road near Baumgarten, we turn right; immediately after that, at the town sign, we turn left onto a gravel path that leads us along the edge of town around a left-hand curve. At the last house, a wide gravel path awaits us, leading us to the Brünnl Chapel 08. Just a few meters past the chapel, we descend a few steps secured by a railing and follow a meadow path into Nandlstadt. We cross the next main road straight ahead and follow it downhill to the middle school. Here, we turn right onto Bräugasse, which leads us back to the cemetery and St. Martin’s Church 01.
