In Neusorg, a visit to the Catholic parish church with its late baroque high altar from 1777 and pulpit with figure of the soul-weigher St. Michael from about 1700 is recommended. In Waldershof, a visit to the former castle on a hill at the western edge of the town and to the former hospital at Markt 9 is worthwhile. The originally late medieval building was rebuilt in 1808. The parish church of St. Sebastian dates back historically to the 13th century; the new building was erected between 1818-1821. In Kösseinebad there is an outdoor swimming pool covering 27,000 sqm.

From the Gasthaus Steinplatte, follow the asphalt road and soon the red/white hiking sign or the E3 with the European flag. Although the first 20 minutes are along roads, traffic is light. Soon the path turns onto forest roads, through meadows and forest paths, isolated farms up to the ascent to the Kösseinehaus, passing the granite quarry on the left via a steep path (approx. 280 m elevation gain). There is a resting spot in between at a rustic spring: Pfalzbrunnen. The Kösseinehaus, also known as Kössainehaus, has two wonderful terraces, one of which offers a fantastic panoramic view. There is also good beer and Bohemian cuisine! Afterwards, you can continue on the Franconian Mountain Trail to Luisenburg (Hotel Luisenburg for overnight stay is highly recommended!). That would add about 4 km.

A high-altitude settlement and many rock formations in the SteinwaldOne might call the little village of Pfaben, nestled in the heart of the Steinwald south of its main ridge, a “climatic health resort”: because of its location a good 200 meters above the town of Erbendorf—to which Pfaben belongs—on a plateau in the middle of the forest, and because of its tourist facilities. In winter, you can already go cross-country skiing in Pfaben when it’s not yet or no longer possible in the valley.

Hike from Fuchsmühl to Harlachberg "To Gasthaus Steinplatte" (Franconian Mountain Trail, 8)

We either start hiking from Wiesau train station (4 km more) after leaving the settlement via field paths to Fuchsmühl to the rest area above, or already follow the hiking sign of the Franconian Mountain Trail from the pilgrimage church in Fuchsmühl. Traveling in May 2023 was not possible from Wiesau by public transport as even a booked on-call bus did not run. The stage hike is well signposted and rewarded with various highlights, such as the Hacklstein and the Weissenstein castle ruins. We chose Harlachberg as a different stage destination, since the Gasthaus Steinwald offers a very nice accommodation with friendly hosts and fair prices. Simply follow the signs from the last forest parking lot straight ahead to Harlachberg for about 600 m. From Harlachberg, we also chose a variant to FGW 9 via the Kösseinehaus and to Luisenburg.
