The 10 most beautiful hikes in Forggensee
Hiking with a view in Rieden at Forggensee
The Forggensee is the largest lake in the Allgäu – however, its waters are not of natural origin. In the 1950s, the Lech was dammed here for power generation. Today, the reservoir only reaches its full water level between June and October.
The hiking trails around Forggensee take you through charming landscapes. Especially recommended is the panorama trail in Rieden. The pleasant 5-kilometer theme trail leads to the western shore of Forggensee and offers magnificent views of Neuschwanstein and Hohenschwangau castles as well as the majestic mountain range of the Allgäuer Königswinkel. Along the way, numerous information boards provide more details about the formation and history of the reservoir. After the short but delightful hike, a plunge into the cool waters of the lake is recommended.
Those who fancy a longer tour and have a bit more stamina can hike the picture-perfect route from Rieden to Dietringen and admire the mountain panorama while swimming at the west shore. If you arrive at Forggensee by car, you can simply park your vehicle at the tourist information center.
Meadows, forests, and water – hiking tours around Lake Forggensee
Especially on the western side of Lake Forggensee, around the towns of Rieden and Roßhaupten, numerous hikes can be undertaken in the surrounding area. Both the charming Tiefental and the idyllic Hopferwald around Rieden invite you to extensive hiking. A trip to the beautiful Faulensee, which lies idyllically in almost untouched nature, is recommended.
The marked hiking trail to Faulensee offers many highlights for you – from fantastic views of the foothills of the Alps to the Allgäu hut atmosphere. The managed hut – called Alpe here – at Faulensee takes care of your physical well-being after the hike. The tour is family-friendly and suitable for hikers of all ages.
Beautiful hiking trails can also be discovered around Roßhaupten on the northern shore of Forggensee. Across wide meadows and through quiet forests it goes around the village, always accompanied by beautiful views over Forggensee and the Alps in the south. An experience for children is the Roßhaupten dragon trail, which leads through the rustic Tiefental and tells exciting dragon stories on many information boards.
Spring and flower lovers should definitely visit Lake Forggensee between April and May. During this time, the dandelions bloom and transform the landscape into a bright yellow sea of blossoms.
Tip: The hiking day at Lake Forggensee can be perfectly combined with a boat tour. The boats depart from the marina in Füssen in summer and autumn. Those who have some time in Füssen can visit the High Castle in the old town, a well-preserved medieval castle complex.
