The 10 most beautiful hikes in Dílar

This route has everything you can manage in a few hours. Great views, high altitude air, steep climbs, and encounters with many animals. In September, there is also the silence; I was out alone today in perfect weather. Since it's only a stone's throw from the sea, you can admire the roof of Europe in one day (the summit Veleta is Europe's highest mountain pass) and then take a swim in the sea (Motril is the nearest town). As Granada has its own airport and is only about 100 km from Malaga, you shouldn't miss the Sierra Nevada on a trip to Andalusia.
Pulpit From the airy lookout of the Pulpit (Atalaya del Púlpito or Morra Hoyos del Veleta), 2979 m, we enjoy the beautiful view; in front of us lies the upper basin of the Veleta valley, whose right part is divided into several basins slanting in the direction of our ascent, sculpted by ice age glaciers. © Bernd Plikat

Ascent from the south via Laguna de las Cabras and the PúlpitoWhile the route from the north through ski slopes, lift facilities and the road has largely lost its appeal as a high mountain ascent, the south side of the Veleta descending to the villages of the Poqueira Gorge – except for the disused road – has maintained its virgin character. On this demanding and varied high mountain circular hike over the "pulpit" we explore the remote side of the massif on rarely traveled paths.

»Dolomite summit« on the slope of the Sierra Nevada The Trevenque dominates the Vega of Granada with its rugged shape. Although it stands as a true two-thousander in the shadow of its much taller neighbors Veleta and Caballo, it is an attractive and popular destination for hikers. On its slopes, you can find the last still pristine Scots pine population (Pinus sylvestris nevadensis) of the Sierra Nevada.

After 15 years of construction, the “Carretera Antigua” was opened on September 15, 1935, leading to the third-highest mountain on the Iberian Peninsula—the 3,396-meter-high “Pico del Veleta.” During the Spanish Civil War, from July 17, 1936, to April 1, 1939, and in the postwar years, further construction toward Capileira was put on hold. In the early 1960s—when the first hotels and ski lifts in the winter sports resort of Pradollano were built—construction work resumed. By 1966, the work was completed, and the mountain pass was open to traffic along its entire length. On January 11, 1999, the Sierra Nevada National Park was established, and the road was closed to public traffic. Since then, the higher elevations of the Sierra Nevada have been accessible only by shuttle. These shuttle services also reduce the ascent to a manageable 620 meters in elevation. In addition, you only pass through the Pradollano ski resort once—the southernmost ski resort in Europe, with 133 runs and 105 km of skiable terrain. Particularly impressive is the rocky north face of Pico del Veleta, which rises steeply for about 300 meters, with a wild and romantic glacial lake at its base. The view of the Sierra Nevada is unparalleled. With a little luck, you might spot an Iberian ibex.> From minibus stop 01, “Posiciones del Veleta,” we hike up the ascending slope through the right-hand curve and, after about 100 m, turn slightly left onto the path, which initially ascends. We reach the Mirador del Corral del Veleta. From here, we look out at the steeply rising rock face of Pico del Veleta and down into a cirque, into which we then descend. At the next fork in the trail, we do not take the path leading slightly to the left and downhill, but instead head slightly to the right. At the level of three large rocks along the trail, an inconspicuous trail branches off to the right toward the 02 Lagunillos del Veleta. After this detour, we return to the main trail, continue on our way, and begin the ascent across a barren gravel field. Numerous cairns make it easier to find the path to the saddle, where there are additional cairns. To the left, another worthwhile detour leads to 03 Cerro de los Machos. Back at the saddle, navigating the scree slopes is difficult. Without losing elevation, we first traverse the slope along additional cairns. Slightly to our right rises the summit of Pico del Veleta; to the left below, a wide trail is visible. The path forks several times and then zigzags steeply downhill until it meets a crossing trail, on which we continue to the right. This is followed by a short section secured with steel cables. Afterward, the route continues along a narrow rock ledge—with a fascinating view of the Mediterranean Sea—until it reaches a wider trail. After a short ascent along this trail, we turn right off it, about 75 m before a stone house. We climb up to a rock—which looks like a goat’s head—and to the marker posts that demarcate the ski area. We now ascend along one of the numerous trails to the summit of 04 Pico del Veleta, visible from afar. Head northwest from the summit and descend in a zigzag pattern to the old pass road 05 Carretera Antigua. Turn right and head slightly downhill to the parking lot 01 Posiciones del Veleta, or take one of the many trails down to the Hoya de la Mora parking lot.

Path is in a very good shape. The hike took us almost 4 hours, with only one steeper part. So overall very smooth walking on marked paths. It is mostly in the shadow and through forest, but you get chances for very nice views.
