An interesting hike, initially through the gorges of the Río Monachil (popular climbing area). Later, beautiful views of the plain of Granada and the Sierra Nevada. (Revision: 2.1.2021)
Short and entertaining gorge crossing near the gates of Granada The Río Monachil, which originates on the slopes of the Veleta, has created a wild gorge at its exit from the mountain massif in the limestone edge zone. It is practically just a "stone's throw" from the Alhambra.
This route has everything you can manage in a few hours. Great views, high altitude air, steep climbs, and encounters with many animals. In September, there is also the silence; I was out alone today in perfect weather. Since it's only a stone's throw from the sea, you can admire the roof of Europe in one day (the summit Veleta is Europe's highest mountain pass) and then take a swim in the sea (Motril is the nearest town).
As Granada has its own airport and is only about 100 km from Malaga, you shouldn't miss the Sierra Nevada on a trip to Andalusia.
»Dolomite summit« on the slope of the Sierra Nevada The Trevenque dominates the Vega of Granada with its rugged shape. Although it stands as a true two-thousander in the shadow of its much taller neighbors Veleta and Caballo, it is an attractive and popular destination for hikers. On its slopes, you can find the last still pristine Scots pine population (Pinus sylvestris nevadensis) of the Sierra Nevada.
Nice round tour with great views of Granada valley and Sierra Nevada. Slow ascent around the hill through pine forest to Fuentefria refuge, then a bit steeper way to Pico de la Carne and Cerro del Sol peaks with great view of Trevenque and Sierra Nevada mountains. The way back down to the road is very steep.

Mirador de los Cahorros - Monachil River - Sierra Nevada National Park
The gorge is a real experience, you should be somewhat agile and sporty, as there are some climbing sections! For the way back, stock up on plenty of water at the spring!

Path is in a very good shape.
The hike took us almost 4 hours, with only one steeper part. So overall very smooth walking on marked paths.
It is mostly in the shadow and through forest, but you get chances for very nice views.
