To honor the name “Land of Wood”, in Maramureș nature blends perfectly with local tradition and crafts. The art of woodworking is internationally recognized, and the people here have been practicing it for centuries with the same skill. Wood carvers open their own workshops to tourists in several villages such as Bârsana, so you can’t miss them. The numerous wooden churches in the region are today among the most sought-after tourist attractions, unique sites, with Maramureș having 8 such places included in the UNESCO World Heritage list.
Classic Maramureș
Maramureș is ideal for a family vacation, where you can bring the children and even the dogs. Due to its isolation in the northernmost part of Romania, Maramureș is mainly accessible by private/rented car or motorhome. A classic 3-7 day itinerary will take you to the main tourist attractions in Maramureș: Sighetu Marmației (for the Communism Memorial and the Merry Cemetery), Iza Valley (with the Bârsana complex and Poienile Izei), Vișeu Valley (Vișeu de Jos - for the narrow-gauge train), Borșa resort and the northern part of the Rodna Mountains for easy mountain hikes to attractions such as the Horses Waterfall. Accommodation options in these tourist destinations in Maramureș are numerous and cater to all tastes.

Any mountain lover will seek the Rodna Mountains. With a little planning and physical effort, the Rodna ridge can be covered in a few days and is very colorful during the rhododendron season (early summer). Less visited, the Maramureș Mountains can be discovered from the border with Ukraine (Vișeu Valley or Bistra) or from the village of Repedea. Hiking trails in Maramureș are extremely beautiful, often long, with medium or hard difficulty.
On the other hand, tourism development has encouraged many NGOs to promote adventure tourism in the area. This has shaped a multitude of cycling trails. Besides those starting at the foot of the Rodna Mountains, from Borșa or Prislop pass, the central and deeply rural area of Maramureș, between Baia Sprie - Cavnic - Cosău Valley and Valea Marei, has a network of bicycle routes. And through Țara Chioarului, a very little touristic area, you will find marked MTB trails.
In the Gutâi Mountains, more precisely at the Cocoș ridge, you can do rock climbing on equipped routes or fly with a paraglider. Also in the Gutâi Mountains, you can practice ski touring - a sport less commonly found in Romania.
What is the ideal season to visit Maramureș?
Maramureș is highly sought after around the major Orthodox holidays (Easter, Christmas, New Year) due to the strictness with which religious, culinary, and traditional costume customs are preserved and promoted here, etc. At the same time, Maramureș is a popular destination in summer, during the holiday season. So to avoid crowds, autumn or spring (outside the Easter holidays) you will definitely find things to do in Maramureș. Practically, the same tourist attractions or hiking trails in the mountain areas are accessible in any season. Some specific and unique details of Maramureș in a particular season are mowing and hay gathering. In Maramureș you can even find a festival where the best mower is awarded (Mesteacăn village).
