Discover the region

The citizens of Oslo are a nature-loving bunch and can be found outdoors all throughout the year. In the warmer months, the parks, islands and hiking trails are filled with locals soaking up the sun. Once winter sets in and the snow arrives, they strap on their cross-country skis and head into the forest.

It's not hard to see why venturing into the woods is so popular. Fjord and city views, secluded lakes, and cosy cabins are just some of the highlights waiting to be discovered, whether you’re on foot or skis.

Many of the main entry points and attractions can be quickly and easily reached on public transport. From there, well-marked and maintained trails guide you towards your destination. Often, there's a cabin along the way serving refreshments and many offer overnight stays.

The city itself is also filled with outdoor activities. There's island hopping, kayaking, and biking in the summer as well as picnics and sports in the park, or swimming at one of the many small beaches. In the winter you can stay warm with ice-skating and sledding.

For a change from city life, or a quick taste of Norway, a day-trip down the coast or to the mountains is an easy option. Within just two to four hours travel from Oslo awaits an endless array of adventures.

I really loved this walk! Beautiful lakes and paths that go through the trees, avoiding the gravel routes where possible. It did take me longer than it took the author but I am maybe not as fit and definitely more cautious over uneven ground than a lot of people. I’d really recommend it, though if you are a scaredy-cat like me, I d avoid days when it might be slippery.

Easy hike from the metro station Vettakollen line 1. It’s all uphill for 55 minutes on a rocky trail. View is really nice on a sunny day. 25-30 minutes to go back down. I suggest taking line 1 again up to Frogneseteren to stop for coffee at the beautiful cafe/restaurant.

Nice short tour around the lake. Easily possible also under winter conditions, basically no altitude change. A lot of banks, fire and bathing places. Ice skating on the lake possible in winter. Super easy accessible with the metro.

Took us (mid 20s) 6 hours to finish the route, including lunch and short breaks every hour or so. The trail was nice, with views and terrain changing every 30mins or so. We would recommend going anticlockwise to finish the harder sections earlier. Nice berries at the start of the trail. The waterpoint was found at Liggern instead. The lake and river sections were not that amazing or clean, otherwise it would have been 5/5. The river section at the end of the trail after the lake/dam seems nicer to waddle in.

Absolutely beautiful but HELL for beginners. This is the most challenging hike i have ever done: it took me 7 hours to do it. I definitely recommend it because the landscape is beautiful but it will cost you a lot. Don't do it if you are not 100% sure you have the capacity: you will have to climb some hard paths. Good luck otherwise!
