Impressive inland national parks
The Biogradska Gora National Park is one of the last three primeval forests in Europe due to its extraordinary biodiversity and unspoiled nature. Located in the east of the country, the national park with its glacial lakes is a worthwhile destination for hikers seeking peace and seclusion.
The Prokletije National Park is located on the border with the neighboring countries of Albania and Kosovo. The region is characterized by rugged rocky peaks such as Zla Kolata, Montenegro's highest mountain, dense forests and crystal-clear glacial lakes. These characteristics have earned the national park the nickname "Alps of the South".
Summer, sun, Mediterranean: unique beaches on the sun-drenched Adriatic coast
A very special place on the Mediterranean coast is the former fishing island of Sveti Stefan, which is one of Montenegro's landmarks with its exposed location and historic buildings. If you want to visit the island, you either have to book a room in a hotel, reserve a table in a restaurant or book a guided tour. However, there are also several viewpoints around Sveti Stefan with unobstructed views of the peninsula.

Hiking through the mountains of Montenegro
However, the most famous multi-day hike in the region is the Peaks of the Balkans Trail, a 180 km circular hiking trail that leads through the border area between Albania, Kosovo and Montenegro in 10 daily stages. Thanks to the ever-increasing popularity of this tour, the infrastructure along the trail is now being developed further and further. Nevertheless, there is still plenty of wild, untouched nature, authentic mountain villages and warm hospitality to experience here.
Lake Skadar (Lake Skutari): the largest lake in the Balkans
With an area of 368 km², Lake Skadar (Lake Skutari) is not only the largest lake in the Balkans, but also the second largest lake in southern Europe after Lake Garda in Italy. Two thirds of the lake's surface area is still on Montenegrin territory, while the remaining third belongs to Albania. The lake is also an important resting and breeding place for migratory birds from northern Europe.

The best time for outdoor adventures: Montenegro in the fall!
The national parks are ideal for hiking now - especially Durmitor National Park with its rugged mountain landscape. Wild gorges, crystal-clear lakes and spectacular panoramic views await you here - often all to yourself. The hiking season usually lasts until late October, the temperatures are perfect for longer hikes and the visibility is clearer than ever.
Autumn is also worthwhile on the coast: in places like Kotor, Budva or along the wild bays, you can enjoy the sea in a relaxed atmosphere. You can often still go swimming or kayaking, while the Mediterranean landscape and charming old towns are at their most tranquil.
Culture and history
In the small town of Cetinje, which was the country's capital until 1918, there are some well-preserved historical buildings. You can immerse yourself in the past in the city's museums.
Today's capital Podgorica is considered the cultural center of the country. There are numerous larger and smaller theaters here. Galleries, restaurants and stores also invite you to spend an eventful day.
