Stage done May ‘25 We camped at Biogradska lake and then hiked up to rejoin VD just after katun dolovi lalevica. We took a detour below Crna glava. We stayed in Vranjak (vranjak hut closed, Eko katun open). From there uneventful but pretty walk, with good views. lots of streams to refill water. There was a nice cafe on the road at prevoj tresnjevik and a ticket office for the national park (€3). We continued to Katun Kobil do. Only place open but a great place to stay. From here we summited Kom ljevorecki and then we left the VD towards Andrijevica.

Stage done at the beginning of August 2024: From Mojkovac, I reached the VD at Šisko jezero because I took a more direct path mentioned in previous comments sign-posted as Katun road. It goes directly from Mojkovac via Katun Matovine and Katun Vragodo towards Šisko jezero. From Šisko Jezero, I continued to Ševarinkso Jezero and further to Katun Raković (accommodation in little wooden houses, good food and possibility to refill water). From there, I followed the path described in previous comments to Ursulovačko jezero (I also ended up in the bushes :D but it was not too bad). At the lake, I came back to the official VD. Beautiful views. I can also confirm that the Vranjak hut is not working. In the area around the hut are some possibilities to refill water. I can also recommend Asanovića katun. The family is very friendly and you can sleep in a little wooden hut. They also offer food and you can refill your water. Towards Trešnjevik, there was also a water tap directly next to the road at Prisojački katun. At the intersection in Trešnjevik, there is a restaurant and camp. I only had a homemade juice and a chat with the friendly owner but the place looked nice.

Hiking NB. Completed on Sept. 28. After you pass Komovi, there's still another 20km before you get to Vranjak. Mostly gravel road following the crnogrorski transversal (CT-1). I had started the day from Carine hut, so this day was long. When I got to Vranjak, the mountain hut was closed for the season. So I just camped next to the house. Too bad, it looked like a really nice mountain hut. I forgot to ask the locals why it had closed (not the weekend, end of season, etc.), but it sounds like more people have had luck in May-August. From Vranjak, it was just another 15km the next day to Doliva. Happened to be very cold (2-3 degrees), rainy and windy, so ended up being more challenging than anticipated...otherwise it's doable to hike straight to Mojkovac. I was happy I stopped in Doliva. Stayed the night at the guesthouse Damjanovic. Wonderful host, highly recommend staying the night. Fresh bread, cheese, prsut, yoghurt, eggs, etc. Was $30 but I had three meals and stayed warm/dry for the afternoon/evening.

Beautiful sceneries in the first part. Once you reach the ski resort it becomes only dirt roads so that’s a bit annoying, but always with a view. We took the shortcut between the two lakes (mentioned in previous comments), and we got lost in the forest by trying to follow too precisely the GPX, at the moment when youre supposed to leave the dirt road (see my picture, the surrounded region is where we got lost). After a lot of bushwhacking we found the real way up : a perfect hiking path with markers. So I guess I would recommend to not follow too precisely your map at this moment and wait until you see a real & nice path. Probably the real start wasn’t long after where we started bushwhacking. Markers were really new and couldn’t be missed, once you were on it at least 😅 At Sisko yezero there’s a b&b above the hill that also sells drinks & coffee, with a water point. Great camp spot at ursulovacko lake, or at the col 45 minutes above the lake. Water at 17.8km, above the lake. Dom Vranjac was closed. Water right after Dom Vranjac. Then at 34.1km. Then at the end of this stage.

Respect! In KOMOVI NATURE PARK, on the route of the First Montenegrin Transversal CT1, at the foot of Kučki Kom, I am the owner of a cabin that has served mountaineers and all other visitors as a shelter and overnight stay all these years ago, and God willing, in the future. The cabin is open and accessible to all visitors. It is listed on the map as a mountain hut. Visitors can, if they wish and are able, donate a symbolic amount, which would help me keep the hut functional, and would also contribute to extending its lifespan. Here are the payment instructions: Account with institution: HBBAMEPGXXX Beneficiary customer: ME25520036000002970937 POPOVIC MLADEN, MEDUN BB, PODGORICA, MONTENEGRO For all information you can contact me the owner: Mladen Popović +38267660054 mladenmpop@gmail.com Best Regards !

Gorgeous trail, extremenly adventurous and diverse. I did a thru-hike between August and October of 2021 and have shared some insights, experiences and GPS tracks on this page: https://www.balkanize-me.eu/ I had many insecurities when I started and was grateful for other hikers' advice. Feel free to reach out to me - I'm very happy to pay it forward!

Location of Eko Katun Vranjak is slightly wrong: katuns are located closer to the trail (on the map, grey houses indicated at the end of the white road, a bit higher than the location given here). Slight mistake but with complete fog it took me a while to find the katuns!

Great trail, I really recommend it, especially the Bosnian part after the Blidinje Lake, for hikers loving some adventure, pristine nature and walking off beaten trails!!!

I’ve noticed that a lot of the reviews are done by thru hikers which is great but if you’re looking to spend a week to 10 days on the Via Dinarica and don’t want to carry all your camping gear then I can definitely recommend hiking from Lake Blidinje to Umoljani staying in a combination of Mountain Huts and towns. Along the way I crossed the Cvirnisca and the Prenj Mountains. Had a swim in Lake Boracko and visited the mountain village of Lukomir. So many highlights in just one week! I was able to use taxis from bigger towns to connect to my start and finish points. Hiking without camping gear did commit me to some pretty long hiking days across difficult terrain so probably not for the inexperienced. My over night stops were Plasa Hut (Vilinac is better located but was closed), Jablanica, Meduprenje Hut, Rujiste, Lake Boracko and Lukomir before finishing in Umoljani. While camping gets you closer to nature being able to stay in accommodation meant I was able to meet some really interesting locals and was able to enjoy a hot meal and hot shower on most nights. I spent a lot of time planning this trip but really pleased how it all worked out. The Via Dinarica is not just for the Svens and Eva’s but with a bit of logistical planning can be a great walk for middle aged full time workers with kids. 🤪
