Thessaly

The region of Thessaly and the archipelago of the Sporades offer beautiful nature experiences far from mass tourism. Culture lovers will appreciate this region too, because even beyond Athens, Greece offers fascinating cultural buildings and historical sites. The monastery complexes of Meteora, protected as a World Heritage Site, are a spectacular example.

Geographically speaking, Central Greece sits at the crossroads between mainland Greece and its islands. It boasts rugged mountains, deep gorges and valleys as well as breathtaking beaches along its coastline. The region also includes some of the most important archaeological sites in Europe including Delphi - home to the famous oracle -and Meteora- a complex of monasteries perched atop towering rock formations.

For those interested in cultural highlights and events, Central Greece has plenty to offer. Visitors can explore ancient Greek temples and amphitheaters such as the Theater of Epidaurus or visit traditional villages like Arachova where they can experience local crafts and festivals.

Culinary enthusiasts will not be disappointed either; central Greek cuisine features dishes made from fresh ingredients sourced from nearby farms such as feta cheese pie or lamb cooked over an open fire pit called souvla.

When it comes to outdoor activities there are many options available year-round depending on your interests. During summer months visitors can enjoy swimming or snorkeling at one of many beautiful beaches while winter brings opportunities for skiing at Parnassos ski resort located just outside of Athens

So what cities should you see when visiting Central Greece? Athens is undoubtedly worth a trip for its historical significance alone but other must-visit destinations include Nafpaktos – known for its picturesque port town –and Karpenisi which offers spectacular views across mountain ranges dotted with charming villages.

In conclusion, if you're looking for a destination that combines natural beauty with rich cultural heritage then look no further than Central Greece! With so much to offer travelers ranging from foodies seeking new culinary experiences through adventurers keen on exploring untamed wilderness, this region is sure to be a highlight of any Greek travel itinerary.

Meteora: Monasteries in lofty heights

The impressive monastery complexes of Meteora are the main attraction for tourists in Thessaly. They are located near the town of Kalambaka and were built in a spectacular location on high sandstone cliffs. Of the 24 monasteries that once existed, 6 are still inhabited and can be visited. Hikers and especially climbers will also get their money's worth in the area - beautiful panoramic views of the rock needles, caves and monasteries open up everywhere.

Mount Olympus: the seat of the gods

The Mount Olympus massif in the north of Thessaly rises up to almost 3000 meters. The ancient Greeks believed that its six peaks were the home of the gods. The name Olymp means something like "light-filled place".

Even apart from mythology, the highest mountain in Greece is a destination worth seeing. The area is protected as a national park. Various hiking trails and paths cross the massif, there are also some huts that are open in summer.

Due to its altitude, Mount Olympus has its own microclimate with unique flora. Almost all year round the peaks are covered with clouds, the weather can be stormy and unpredictable - Zeus, the father of the gods, sometimes hurls lightning bolts. On clear days, the view over the surrounding countryside and to the sea is magnificent.

The Sporades: Beautiful beaches and remote nature

The region of Thessaly also includes several islands of the Northern Sporades: Skiathos, Skopelos, Alonnisos and many other small islands. Beautiful beaches, secluded bays and untouched forests characterize the nature - perfect for a combination of beach and hiking vacations. On the four main islands, numerous restaurants offer typical Greek cuisine with a sea view.

In contrast to the Greek islands further south, the Sporades are not yet characterized by mass tourism. The islands can be reached by ferry from Volos, and Skiathos also has an airport.

A beautiful trail! The climb follows a wild, natural path through the forest, leading to a lovely pool of crystal-clear water. The way back takes you along a well-maintained path through a chestnut grove. The uphill trail is indeed covered with leaves, but in my opinion, that only adds to the magical atmosphere of the hike. Highly recommended! Many thanks to Samine for sharing this wonderful route.

Nice trail, perfect for a morning power walk with party high pulse (very steep for a while after about 500m). 1,5 hours in total from Skiathos town bus stop 0. Not possible to follow the track from the lower right corner of the map back to start point but fine to follow the asphalt road back.

Had a lovely walk, definitely wouldn’t call it easy though! We were pleasantly surprised when we were following the river, it was a tricky route but was clearly enough marked which way to go. The beach was lovely and we wish we had brought swimwear! Few tough uphill sections but they were not too long. Recommend going clockwise like we did as I think it would be harder the other way.

This trail was really beautiful. We parked at the restaurant and the chapel, then walked past the winery and did the loop counterclockwise. Right in the first kilometer, a 1.5-meter-long brown snake darted across our path. The highlights are the two peaks and the meadows. You keep coming across spider webs stretched across the paths. All in all, a great hiking trail.

The trail has its highlights, but also its downsides. We really enjoyed the section through the riverbed. But when you reach the intersection with the gravel paths, the trail disappears. You have to walk along a stretch of gravel road. This is followed by a grueling climb through the thick vegetation. You’re rewarded with a small pine grove and the summit hut. The descent is then along a gravel road, which we found unattractive. We were also surprised by the many spent shotgun shells at the summit.

We took the walk around lunchtime five days ago. It’s an easy walk, thanks in part to the newly paved road. That’s how we discovered Diamanti Beach, a real hidden gem. Except for the stretch along the main road, it’s a very nice walk.

Easily navigable and mainly and roads and tracks. The last part of the footpath to the beach is quite rough and stony. Great views along the way and lots of shady sections!

I did this clockwise and the second half - from ligaries beach - is a killer in the heat. Especially if you’ve just eaten lamb chops and chips and had a glass of wine at the Taverna Ligaries…

Getting to and from the trails in the Northern part of the island is tricky without a car, but from 15th May 2026 there are now 4 services a day to Ekonistria ... so this gave us an opportunity to complete ST10 by walking in and out via Ekonistria (Kounistra/Iconistria) Monastery stop. How wrong we were! The 11:30 service from the Port was fine ... we were the only passengers. The 16:00 return was an altogether different matter. Although at the signed stop 25 minutes before the bus was due, and in spite of the fancy (& expensive?) allegedly live time information accessible by QR code, the bus would arrive in 11 minutes - 9 minutes - 7 minutes ... ... 3 minutes - 1 minute - 0 minutes, but it never did. No wonder public tranport inspires no confidence! A second shambles during our time on Skiathos. Be warned: it's another 3 mile walk out to Bus stop 18! The ST10 walk itself is highly rewarding, though gradients are very steep. We walked up the paved road from Ekonistria to join ST10 not quite at the Elatos peak. We then followed the trail anti-clockwise, descending steeply to the Acheela Creek, clearly used by pony trekking. Following the creek is a pleasant shady respite from the slopes, but soon the ST10 climbs away up again. The path is well marked, though many marks are badly faded, but it is brutally steep and unrelenting. There is at least some shade on this section. Eventually there's a trail intersection with ST13 coming from Ekonistra on its way looping back eventually to Aselinos. Pressing on, there' a further 40 minutes of stiff ascent till the Elatos Peak is reached ... with its quirky, lop-sided wooden tower, and amazing panoramic views. After getting your breath back, and maybe some lunch, a rough vehicle track rejoins the 'main' road, and starts the downhill section back to the Monastery, and the bus that never arrives....

A relatively short trail, with little hard climbing - suprising since it visits two high peaks! The problem is that for walkers reliant on public transport, the nearest stop is at the Evagelistria Monastery, but its a stiff climb from there to the ST7. Even more challenging is when one arrives in plenty of time for the 10:30 public bus service to be told that, although it is not permitted to book in advance, all the services for today have been allocated to a large school party! Surely better to have arranged a dedicated service for them and not have to turn-away so many members of the public? The strange machinations of some organisations are indeed deeply mysterious. Not to be defeated, we got a local taxi to take us to the monastery for €10. We still had the stiff climb up the ST6 route which returns to the monastery from Kastro down the concrete road. We therefore chosecto start ST7 where it intersects ST6, and then began the shortish climb to Karafiltsanaka at 427m, flying the Greek Flag, and with a Christian cross at the summit. Staggering panoramic views over Skiathos town and the surrounding seascape. The trail then leads onward to the true peak of Skiathos at Mytikas (433m) ... the last few metres are a rocky climb to the summit, assisted by guide-ropes. There is a metal box at the summit-marker, containing a visitor's book, so you can record your visit with a message, and see who visited before you. Descending, the path soon drops down a steep slope onto a road ... with a bench and table kindly provided by Skiathos Hiking, so you can dine in the splendour of the view toward the Greek Mainland. Fed and watered, the road leads past the pretty church of Agios Apostolos with it's tired bell tower. Soon the ST7 route turns left off the road to emerge near the Parissis Winery. Continuing, the circle is soon completed at the ST6 intersection. We followed ST6 back to Evagelistria, then down the ST5 back to bus stop 2 ... takes about an hour, being downhill.
