The six still inhabited monasteries can be visited and are the most important tourist attraction in the region. Meteora is protected as a Unesco World Heritage Site.
In the past, some of the monasteries could only be reached with the help of rope ladders or winches, on which a basket was pulled up. Nowadays, however, staircases have been built.
Meteora is considered a popular climbing area with various, sometimes spectacular routes.
