Discover the region
In addition to the museum, it is also worth taking a walk through the historic town centre with its half-timbered houses and winding streets. You should also pay a visit to the Felsenkirche (rock church) high up on a mountain - from here you have a breathtaking view over the town.
Birkenfeld, on the other hand, is best known for the Hunsrück-Hochwald National Park, which stretches right outside the town. Here you can hike or cycle for hours and enjoy unspoilt nature.
For those with a taste for culture, don't miss the annual jazz festival in Birkenfeld or one of the many concerts that take place on a regular basis.
Idar-Oberstein and Birkenfeld also have a lot to offer in terms of cuisine: For example, try regional specialities such as Saumagen (a kind of Palatinate favourite dish) or Riesling wines from the surrounding area.
If it ever rains, a visit to the indoor playground "Kinderparadies" is a good idea or you can visit one of the many cosy cafés and restaurants.
In summer, it is most beautiful in the forests of the national park or at one of the numerous lakes in the area. In winter, on the other hand, you can go skiing or ice skating on the surrounding mountains.
All in all, Idar-Oberstein and Birkenfeld are definitely worth a trip, for nature lovers as well as for those interested in culture. A travel guide who does not recommend these two towns has missed out!
