...that's what the Franconian Forest offers.
In 2015, the Franconian Forest was named Bavaria's first "Quality Region Hikeable Germany". In addition to the 242 km long circular hiking trail FrankenwaldSteig and the 31 FrankenwaldSteigla (day and half-day tours between 5 and 18 km), hiking enthusiasts will find a comprehensive, well-marked network of hiking trails in the Franconian Forest, which covers over 4,200 km and leaves (almost) nothing to be desired.
"Listen to the silence", "breathe in the vastness" and "understand the forest" are the central themes of the tours. Simply listen to the rustling of the leaves in the wind, enjoy the view from a rock and wander through the colorful autumn forest. Hiking pleasure for all the senses!

The Franconian Forest with its dense forests offers bright clearings and plateaus with unexpected views time and again. Here you can simply let your eyes and thoughts wander, take a deep breath and come to rest. Feel the wind on your skin, lean back and let your mind wander...
If you're lucky, you might see the rare black stork making its majestic circles or watch the migratory birds gather in the fall to head south. Get away from the hustle and bustle of everyday life. But details in the distance also awaken the spirit of discovery in you and whet your appetite for new adventures. On the FrankenwaldSteigla "Breathe wide" you can explore new horizons and think outside the box.

Of knights, damsels and ghosts
If you are out and about in the Franconian Forest, you will always discover the battlements and towers of the numerous castles, palaces and ruins between the dense treetops. A touch of history wafts through the entire region and invites you on a journey into the past.
Most castles and palaces offer various themed tours. Of course, history plays a major role, but also the lives of the former inhabitants and the many sagas and legends that surround the old walls.
Green Belt experience
The Iron Curtain separated the divided Germany for four decades. Barbed wire, expanded metal fencing, concrete walls, watchtowers and, at times, mines and automatic firing systems shaped the landscape along the border.
Because this area was not used and was sporadically cleared of bushes, nature was able to develop freely. The border strip developed into a varied mosaic of open, semi-open and bushy habitats and thus into valuable retreats for rare and endangered animal and plant species.
Since 1989, this biotope network has been known as the "Green Belt", which runs for 1393 km across Germany - from the Baltic Sea to the Vogtland region between Plauen and Hof.
In the Franconian Forest, the Green Belt stretches from its birthplace Mitwitz along the Franconian-Thuringian border to the formerly divided village of Mödlareuth, also known as "Little Berlin". Numerous reminders of the former division can still be discovered along the Green Belt.
