Die Burg Lauenstein liegt nördlich von Kronach, unweit der fränkisch-thüringischen Grenze. Ihre ältesten Teile gehen auf das 12. Jahrhundertzurück;  vom 13. bis weit in das 15. Jahrhundert hinein war Burg Lauenstein Sitz des einst mächtigen Thüringer Geschlechts der Grafen von Orlamünde. Nach dessen Niedergang ging sie zunächst durch verschiedene Hände, bis 1506 die Herren von Thüna in den Besitz von Burg und Herrschaft Lauenstein gelangten. 

Der nach ihnen benannte Hauptflügel mit seinen vier Ecktürmen wurde 1551–1554 errichtet und ist ein bemerkenswertes Beispiel der Renaissance-Schlossarchitektur Mitteldeutschlands. 1622 erwarb der Bayreuther Markgraf Christian die Burg, bevor sie 1791 an Preußen und schließlich 1803 an Bayern fiel.

1815 in Privatbesitz übergegangen, verwahrloste die Anlage in der Folgezeit zunehmend, bis sie 1896 von Dr. Erhard Meßmer angekauft wurde, der Burg Lauenstein im Sinne des Späthistorismus renovierte und nach dem Vorbild der Wartburg bei Eisenach ausstattete. Diese Verbindung von Architektur des 16. Jahrhunderts mit Elementen des Historismus und des Jugendstils wird besonders im Orlamünde-Saal (Eingangshalle) und der großen Ritterstube im Thünabau sichtbar.

1962 erwarb der Freistaat Bayern die Burg und restaurierte die Gesamtanlage in den Jahren 1966–1976 aufwendig. In über 20 Räumen der Hauptburg wurde ein umfangreiches Museum eingerichtet, in dem neben Rüstungen und Waffen die erhaltene Möblierung mit Kachelöfen, Gemälden, Wand- und Deckenmalereien den Besuchern ein getreues Bild mittelalterlichen Burglebens vermittelt.

Bäuerliche und handwerkliche Objekte sowie kunsthandwerkliche Spezialsammlungen von Schlössern, Lampen und Musikinstrumenten ergänzen das Burgmuseum anschaulich.
