Route description: This circular route is not as demanding as the work of the slate workers, but already after leaving the town centre of Ludwigsstadt towards the ski lift, good fitness is required. Only experienced cyclists will reach the Rennsteig without having to push their bike. However, the effort to overcome almost 200 metres of altitude is rewarded, and on the Rennsteig it is flat until Steinbach a. Wald and further towards Thuringia to just before the state border. Here the path turns left and descends over a long downhill section through forest and meadows back to Ludwigsstadt. (*)

Route course: Ludwigsstadt town centre, towards the ski lift, on the Rennsteig to Steinbach a. Wald and further towards Thuringia, Ottendorf, Ludwigsstadt. (*)

Special features & sights: Ludwigsstadt: Slate board museum, Trogenbach viaduct, prof. Marien chapel; Steinbach a. Wald: leisure and tourism centre, Rennsteig garden. Detour to Lauenstein castle or Thüringer Warte possible.

(*) All routes designated with KC are suggestions and are not specially signed or marked on site. They mostly run on generally signposted cycle paths! Please therefore pay attention to the specified route in the tour description.

    Safety information

For example, between Lisbon and Porto, the infrastructure is not yet well developed. The stages from one accommodation to the next can therefore be long and adventurous.
