Winding half-timbered alleys next to magnificent baroque ensembles, vast forests next to fertile vineyards, relaxed enjoyment alongside plenty of sporting action: in Franconia, these apparent contrasts simply go together. This diversity is exactly what characterizes the travel destination in northern Bavaria. 16 different holiday landscapes provide plenty of variety with delicious cuisine, beer and wine specialties, sights and lively culture – typically Franconian, indeed.
Sustainable vacation in Franconia
In Franconia, a great holiday enjoyment with a small CO2 footprint is wonderfully uncomplicated. All you need is a love for diversity and a small change of perspective! With its ten nature parks, Franconia is as sustainable as it is diverse. In the Franconian Forest, the slate mountains rise, in the Fichtel Mountains bizarre rocks stretch to the sky, and in the Spessart ancient oaks provide shade for hikers. Mysterious moors make the Bavarian Rhön a nature experience, while rocks and caves give the Franconian Switzerland – Franconian Jura Nature Park its wild-romantic appearance.
Forest and vineyards unite in the Bergstraße-Odenwald Nature Park, Steigerwald, and Haßberge, whose hills are also crowned by countless castles and palaces. And in the Altmühl Valley Nature Park and the Franconian Heights Nature Park? There, sheep nibble on aromatic herbs on sun-drenched juniper heaths and orchards (www.frankentourismus.de/nachhaltiger-urlaub/naturpark).

Hiking in Franconia
Franconia's unique nature is home to many rare plants and animals – and a free space for all who want to experience it actively. Hikers have all paths open in Franconia: they lead to the major highlights of Franconia like the Ochsenkopf or the Schneeberg as well as to the many small wonders created by nature: karst springs cascading over moss-covered sinter terraces, towering basalt columns, sharply cut gorges in the landscape, or centuries-old giant trees.

Cycling in Franconia
Cyclists enjoy following the winding paths of the Franconian rivers and greet the boaters paddling along, discovering nature for themselves. The mountain bikers are a bit more athletic as they navigate the low mountain ranges, where they find their territory on natural single trails and in bike parks. Fancy even more changes of perspective? Then (safely secured) head up to the world-famous climbing rocks of Franconia or venture into an underground world of stalactites and cave halls.
City trips
Green breaks are even possible in the middle of the city in Franconia: thanks to the castle gardens, landscape parks, or private refuges, which invite you to sensuous strolling as „Parks and Gardens – Franconia's Paradises“ – from the Bayreuth Hermitage over the Eichstätt Bastion Garden to the Bürgerpark Hain, the largest biotope in Bamberg (www.frankens-paradiese.de).
