The Saimaa Lake District

The Saimaa Lake District
Photo: Visit Saimaa

Lake Saimaa is actually a network of many waters and islands, which are connected by narrow straits. The branched lake district also connects several larger towns such as Mikkeli, the largest town in the area, the industrial town of Varkaus and Savonlinna – known for the northernmost well-preserved medieval castle in the world, Olavinlinna, and the annual opera festival.

In the Saimaa lake basins, the traces of the last ice age can be clearly seen in the shape of the lakes and islands, as well as in the smooth bank cliffs. The varied landscape includes rocky shores and sandy beaches, dark waters to blue glittering and clear lakes, small islands of pure rock covered with moss and trees and shrubs.

The Saimaa lake system is best known for its clean water and is home to the rare Saimaa ringed seal. As one of Finland's most popular recreational areas, many locals have their summer homes here. In the midst of nature, the conditions are ideal for a relaxing holiday in a cabin. Also the offer of outdoor activities, cultural offers and sights is not to be scoffed at.

On the move on water

Of course, a tour by kayak or canoe is just the right thing in this huge lake system. In the widely ramified lakes with their many islands the water is mostly calm and therefore also suitable for beginners. In the middle of the blue water and green islands it is quiet – no city noise can be heard here. In many areas even motorboats are forbidden, ideal for an excursion by canoe or kayak. Physical activity outdoors is healthy in addition to the experience of nature. For hours, days or even weeks you can paddle over the Saimaa lakes and get lost in the wonderful nature.

Hiking along the lakeshore

You can also explore the region on foot. Trails can be found everywhere and lead through a varied area. Boreal forests and shore paths, traces of the ice age and a refreshing jump into the cool water – hiking is not boring here. On long or short stretches you can go on the marked paths or find your way on your own. Depending on the season, you can discover different facets of nature in the Saimaa region and withdraw completely from your daily routine.

Explore Saimaa by bike

What better way to discover the region than by bike? Well developed cycle routes lead you along the branched lakes. You can head for the resting places and enjoy the views in peace. Marked routes can be found not only in Mikkeli and Savonlinna, but also all around. In the national parks you can also discover unspoilt nature. You will find accommodation in old manor houses that have been converted into cosy hotels or in old farms if you are looking for a little more adventure.

Charming hotels & peaceful lakeside cottages

In addition to diverse nature activities, Lake Saimaa treats you with atmospheric accommodation options from charming hotels to spas and peaceful lakeside cottages. The surrounding lakeviews and nature combined with 15,000 islands and 15,000 kilometers of coastline create a unique setting to spend a relaxing holiday in Finnish Lakeland. Explore the accommodation options and find your own favorite.

Saimaa winter experiences

Saimaa offers a variety of winter routes from ice skating, snowshoeing, skiing, winter hiking to winter cycling in wonderful lake and ridge landscapes. Spend an active day in crisp winter weather and enjoy the surrounding pure nature and silence. Don't forget to enjoy tasty local food afterwards. In the evening you can admire the starry sky, try winter swimming from warm sauna or just enjoy and relax by the fireplace in your cottage. On guided winter tours, you can experience Saimaa from whole new perspective: How about floating on the icy lake while staying safe and warm?

In Saimaa you will find Finland's longest tour skating routes, but also much more to do for the whole family as well as the experienced outdoor persons. Check Saimaa's winter routes and experience the winter in the heart of Finnish Lakeland.

Beautifull hiking route also in winter. Surprise in wintertime there is a route for hikers maintained with skidooso you can hike or drive mountainbike or wlk with a dog. I had a rest by the bonfire (family hikers with children had started it) at Mustalampi lean to shelter, nice. Winter weekends Tervastupa cafeteria is open in a log cabin was great place to enjoy hot coffee or hot chocolate as I did. Friendly atmosphere.

Miksi gravel-pyöräily on noussut suosioon Suomessa?

Ensimmäinen askel on löytää oikeanlainen pyörä.

Opettele tuntemaan, milloin pyörä on lukkiutumisen rajalla.

    Varusteet ja huolto

Gravel-pyöräily asettaa erilaisia vaatimuksia varusteille kuin maantiepyöräily. Pöly, lika ja epätasainen maasto kuluttavat pyörää enemmän.

    Varuste

    Lyhyempi

Enimmäkseen mukava järvipitoinen reitti, jonka varrelta löytyy paljon viehättäviä pieniä yöpymispaikkoja (Bikelandin listaus on olematon), suosittelenkin valitsemaan majoitukset pikkukohteista (Varkauden ja Savonlinnan sijaan). Huom!

Perfect century+ ride. In my case it was 130km which were quite flat. A nice mixture of tarmac and gravel and a change of scenery during the ride. It took me less than 7 hours to finish it, while the ride itself was little bit more than 5.30 hours. I chose to start the route in Kerimaki (near the wooden church) and this way I could enjoy a delicious coffee and cake at the end. Although you can make a stop in Punkaharju, I’ve stopped for refuel in a supermarket in Kesalahti (short detour). Another possible stope for rest and some supplies is a gas station in Vaaramaki. Please note that a short part of the trail near Kerimaki is not rideable and it’s better to bypass. You can see my route on Strava: https://strava.app.link/Na4PVE4k9Cb
