Discover the region
All roads lead to Rome? No, to Mittersill!
No matter from which direction - if you want to visit the Oberpinzgau, you almost can't avoid the municipality. However, those who only experience Mittersill while passing through really have only themselves to blame. To the great delight of the locals, the little town has retained its original character. Here, the nature of the national park and the historical sights of the town go hand in hand. People still greet each other on the streets, children play outside and the train still does not run more than once an hour.
The way to the national park capital
Mittersill has always been able to score with its central location directly on the Salzach River, between Pass Thurn and Felbertauern. With the construction of the National Park Center, the people of Mittersill also decided without further ado to have themselves elevated to the status of a town. But "national park capital" simply sounds nicer than "main municipality".
Historical highlights
The National Park Center has a lot to offer, but history is not one of them. But if that were the only attraction in Mittersill, we would now be in serious need of explanation. Therefore, for culture enthusiasts, there are not only three churches worth seeing, but also the local history museum in the Felberturm, which, among other things, sheds more light on the history of the mule trade. In addition, the steam locomotive of the Pinzgauer Lokalbahn makes a stop in the town and can hardly be surpassed in nostalgic feeling.
Natural monuments in Mittersill
The Hintersee lake in Mittersill and the associated Schösswendklamm gorge have been declared natural monuments. The same applies to the Heidnische Kirche near the Elisabethsee. Instead of many small ones, this church consists of only one large stone and has little else to do with a church in the traditional sense. A special place that is definitely worth a visit. With the high moor "Wasenmoos" the four natural monuments of Mittersill are complete. On the theme trail you can even learn a lot about the moor.
Vacation in the Kitzbühel Alps
All summit strikers can simply leave the circular route as it is and take the next gondola of the panorama lift. In summer with hiking boots, in winter preferably with skis or snowboard. After all, here you get directly into the world-famous ski and hiking area Kitzbühel Alps.
By the way:
The first summit cross of the Resterhöhe is already climbed during the gondola ride - and with a perfect view over Mittersill and the Upper Pinzgau.
