Mittersill: Amerbach
Starting from the north portal of the Felbertauern Tunnel, you hike along the Amerbach on idyllic forest and meadow paths to the Taimeralm (NOT managed!)
A spot with wonderful natural scenery can be found at Elisabethsee. The former gravel pond is distinguished by its water quality. On the south side of the lake, you find another natural monument: the Heathen Church, an approximately 10 m high central gneiss block. It rises powerfully from a rockslide debris field and is broken in the middle. If you squeeze through the narrow gap, you are said to shake off illnesses and all evil. The Heathen Church was protected as a natural monument in 1987. Nearby, you find another phenomenon, the so-called wind holes. In the fallen loose rock masses, an underground tube system several hundred meters long formed. Cold air from higher areas sinks downward and cools further before it flows out of the wind holes as icy gusts. The climate around the wind holes is permanently cooler and has created its own vegetation.
