The Atlas is a high mountain range in the northwest of Africa and covers the countries of Morocco, Algeria and Tunisia. The distinctive weather divide is formed by several mountain ranges and the High Atlas is the best known in Morocco. Here is also the highest mountain of the range, the Toubkal with 4,167 m. Be sure to follow the travel warnings of your country! Traveling in the border regions can be especially dangerous.

Discover the region
The Atlas Mountains are part of the overall picture, especially in the south of Morocco. Their snow-covered peaks form a great contrast to the dry Sahara in the south. Hiking and trekking routes are particularly beautiful in the Atlas. However, you should always inform yourself about the current situation in the areas and it is best to start with a guide who is familiar with the area.
The Atlas is divided into several chains: Rif lies directly on the Moroccan Mediterranean coast. The Middle Atlas is located in the center of Morocco and the High Atlas in the south of it. In the southeast of Morocco, you find Jbel Sarhro and Jbel Sirwa in the central south. The Tellatlas or Little Atlas is located on the Algerian Mediterranean coast, south of it is the Sahara Atlas. In Tunisia, only the offshoots of these two chains join.
Also the larger cities of the three countries Algeria, Tunisia and Morocco are located in the mountainous area because, in the south, the Sahara ensures bad settlement conditions. Some cities are located directly in the mountains, but most are at the foot of the mountains. The high mountains are characterized by a Mediterranean climate, but the differences between the northern part and the southern part facing the Sahara are enormous.
