Nature and culture in the Ammergau Alps
The mountain range of the Northern Limestone Alps is a rather sparsely populated landscape, in the middle of which rises the river Ammer, which gives it its name. A large part of the mountain range is formed by the Ammergebirge nature reserve – the largest nature reserve in Bavaria – which includes mountains and forests as well as meadows, moors and wild rivers. The Ammergebirge is divided in two lengthways by the Graswangtal valley.
Due to the low level of development in the Ammergau Alps and only a few mountain railways or managed huts, the mountains are ideal for those seeking peace and quiet and wanting to explore nature in its original form. On the way, you will discover rare plants such as the Spirke tree species, roam through high and low moors and reach impressive lakes. The Plansee and Heiterwangersee lakes on Tyrolean territory are particularly attractive because of their fjord-like appearance cut into the wooded slopes and the almost undeveloped shores.
Cultural experiences are not neglected in the Ammergau Alps either. Tradition and customs are still alive in the region: the Sunday and holiday costumes, the rustic folk evenings and the Stubenmusi are all deeply rooted in the Ammertal valley. You can also experience Lüftl paintings and Passion plays in Oberammergau or visit the castles of Neuschwanstein, Hohenschwangau and Linderhof as well as the Ettal monastery.

Active in the Ammergau Alps
Hikers and mountain climbers in particular enjoy coming to the Ammergebirge. The not-too-high peaks, which can usually be reached in a day‘s hike from the valley towns, offer wonderful experiences in the protected and sparsely populated natural landscape. Wild river and stream courses, steep heights but also moors and extensive forests await discovery tours. For longer adventures, take the Via Alpina purple trail, which also leads through the Ammergebirge on three stages, and if you want to find peace and quiet, take the meditation trail through the Graswangtal valley.
The Ammergau Alps are also an excellent destination for cyclists. The network of cycle paths stretches over 500 kilometres through the region and offers everything from long-distance cycle paths to valley routes and mountain tours. The intact mountain world can be experienced particularly well on two wheels between the Zugspitze and Neuschwanstein. Mountain bikers are also on the move in the Ammergebirge. Whether leisurely along the Plansee or more challenging up the Pürschling. The Bikepark Oberammergau, which opened in 2016, also offers a special incentive, as the trails do not cross any hiking trails and thus guarantee full MTB enjoyment.
In winter, an extensive network of cross-country ski trails in the valleys connects the various villages and is considered to be snow-sure. Attractive circuits against a fantastic mountain backdrop lure you out into the wintry cold. Friends of alpine skiing will find perfectly groomed slopes at the Steckenberg lifts in Oberammergau, Bad Kohlgrub and Unterammergau.
