The walking tour starts in the center of the old imperial city, at Stiftsplatz. Next to the well-known Stiftskirche was formerly the town hall in today’s Haus Eichenlaub. After a short time, the town hall moved. From there, it continues to Haus zum Maulbeerbaum. This property is based on a medieval noble estate acquired in 1322 by Klingenmünster monastery and later developed as one of two city estates. By 1488, the building appears as Herberge am Maulbeerbaum, a representative lodging and day facility. The Landauer Bund was founded here in 1522. The route continues via Meerweibchenstraße 9 towards Heiligenthaler Hof. The building at Meerweibchenstraße 9, with its arcade courtyard surrounded on all sides by wooden galleries, is one of the best-preserved examples in Landau’s old town. The Heiligenthaler Hof was formerly used as a brewery. For Landau's conditions, it has an unusually rich facade design. The buildings on Martin-Luther-Straße and its surroundings illustrate the transition from Baroque to early Classicism.
The corner houses at 20 and 28, as well as the Kohl-Weigandsches Haus, feature slightly protruding risalites and door windows with slightly projecting balconies enclosed by iron railings with chain motifs. The property at Königstraße 50 is fully dedicated to the stylistic features of early Classicism. Along the entire street, there are repeatedly notable buildings from other eras. The three-house building at Königstraße 69/69a, built by Albert Boßlet in late Art Nouveau, stands somewhat apart from the early Classicists. The former Augustinian monastery remains one of the city's architectural highlights unchanged. Shortly before the path turns left into Theaterstraße, there is the former Bürgerspital Landau. The inner gate arch still bears an inscription indicating its construction in 1863. Theaterstraße heads west, passing Kleiner Platz, which was formerly used as a potato market, directly to the Old Department Store. It was formerly a warehouse, armory, and dance hall and played an important role in Landau’s urban life even before the French Revolution. Since the last renovation in 1996/97, the building serves as the municipal cultural center.
Right next to it is the Katharinenkapelle, another medieval monument. Opposite is the Frank Loebsche Haus. Typical for Landau’s bourgeois house is the four-sided courtyard surrounded by two-story wooden arcades. Here, for years, the wine tavern "Zur Blum" has been located. The route continues to Martha-Saalfeld-Platz, where you directly approach the former French commandant's office. The route now leads into Marktstraße, where the buildings at 38 and 43 have preserved their half-timbered construction. No. 43 shows Landau architecture before the Thirty Years' War. Diagonally opposite is the Red Barracks, the only remaining barracks from the French fortification era. On Rathausplatz is the town hall, built in 1827 as the Bavarian commandant's office. At the corner of Rathausplatz/Marktstraße, the Böckingsches Palais can be seen. Following Marktstraße south, you pass Wertheimer department store and Adler Pharmacy, which already shows some reformist touches, unlike the eclectic department store. Returning via Rathausplatz, the route leads into Trappengasse. The most important property here is the 11/13 court complex, likely serving as a pensioner’s house of the former hospital around the corner. The joining schoolyard was laid out only in the 1830s. The route continues south into Gerberstraße, where the property at No. 24 deserves special mention. It has outstanding design quality. The ground floors are opened by large showcase windows with dividing cast iron supports. At the intersection of Kronstraße/Gerberstraße is the corner pavilion, skillfully standing out from the urban context. The tour concludes via the Stiftspassage, rebuilt after the war. Here one can see how high the architectural ambition of Landau's reconstruction really was.
