She was a German philosopher and women's rights advocate of Jewish descent who converted to the Catholic Church in 1922. During the time of National Socialism, she was a victim of the Holocaust as "Jew and Christian." Edith Stein was gassed in Auschwitz on August 9, 1942. She is the first born Jew in church history to be officially canonized. In 1999, she was declared a patron saint of Europe by Pope John Paul II, alongside St. Bridget of Sweden and St. Catherine of Siena. Her Roman Catholic and Protestant memorial day is August 9. She is regarded as a bridge-builder between Christians and Jews.
