Roadbook
The tour starts at the Geißbockbrunnen (information sign), which is located right next to the Deidesheim Tourist Information Office and just a three-minute walk from the train station. Here you can learn interesting facts about the more than 600-year-old tradition of the Geißbock auction on Pentecost Tuesday. From here, the route continues past the site of the former Deidesheim moated castle—with its castle park and the Kulturhaus Ehemalige Synagoge (information board) across the street—to the archway of the Hotel Deidesheimer Hof. (Alternatively, you can take an uneven cobblestone path with an 8% incline past the moat to Burggasse, then cross Weinstraße to reach Stadtmauer Gasse.) If you’d like to continue on an accessible route, turn left and head toward the historic market square with the Andreasbrunnen fountain and places to stop for refreshments. From here, use the pedestrian traffic light to cross Weinstraße and continue into Kirchgasse, passing the Catholic Church of St. Ulrich. A little further on, you’ll pass the Kirchstübl and turn into Weingasse. Follow this street to the end, then turn left and follow Stadtmauergasse until it leads into a paved street, Heumarktstraße. Turning left here, you’ll reach the Historic Town Hall. The Wine Museum of Wine Culture is located here (currently closed). This is also the site of the annual “Geißbock” auction. From here, you can cross Weinstraße to reach the 3 F Museum of Photography, Film, and Television Technology, which is - Open Sun–April–Oct. (information sign), or walk to the Hotel-Café Ritter von Böhl and the Spitalkirche (information sign detailing the over 500-year history of the Bürgerhospital Foundation). Otherwise, walk around the Historic Town Hall, past the choir of St. Ulrich Church, and return to the pedestrian traffic light to cross Weinstraße. From here, head back to the Historic Market Square and follow the same route back to the Geißbock Fountain, your starting point. There you’ll find the town square, surrounded by several places to stop for a bite to eat—from ice cream parlors to traditional restaurants and bistros. It’s only a few minutes’ walk to the Deidesheim train station.
