Bauerfeind Sports
As a resident of Imberg and a keen trail runner, I usually do this route twice a week. With plenty of trails in the areas, the great thing is that you can also extend or shorten it to meet your fitness, wishes, or time constraints.
The route takes you from Imberg before following and eventually crossing the Lowenbach stream to start the climb to the Sonthofer Hof. Ascending further takes you to the lonely and peaceful back of Strausberg, where you can look up at the craggy buttresses and pine trees of the Imberger Horn. You then loop around to descend back to Imberg along the main road which provides views up the valley towards Oberstdorf, over Sonthofen, and across to the Nagelfluhkette.
Refreshment stops are available along the way, even though I'm not a frequent visitor and if you're visiting in winter, even the uppermost sections of the trail usually get enough traffic to allow you to get away with the minimum in terms of equipment, meaning that this route is pretty much one for the whole year.
Have fun!
Author’s recommendation
- Refreshment stops are available.
- Download the map in advance. You're very unlikely to get lost, but you will encounter some forestry tracks and various other offshoots.
- Sledding down from the Strausberghütte is also popular in winter, so if you still have any energy left and can be bothered to walk back up there, you might consider bringing your toboggan - or file idea away for another day : )

Safety information
- In winter, be mindful of folks sledding when heading down from the Strausberghütte or on the approach to the Sonthofer Hof, and keep to the edge of the path. It can be a bit icy on the steps that lead up from the river.
Tips and suggestions
- You can alter the route to extend or shorten it. You can also do it in reverse.
- If visiting in summer, you can also include the Imberger Horn. I do not recommend this in winter, however, as the north-facing side is actually quite steep and avalanches are not uncommon.
- Please take your litter home with you.
