Energy Distribution
The route speaks for itself as 95% of the total 330 meters of elevation is within the first 5 km – within which 2 km is flatter sections, so we climb 300 meters in 3 km. Thorough warm-up and good fitness are key.
Recommended Time
Can be completed at any time of day. There is no shade in the first two steep kilometers, so avoid starting at noon in summer if possible. Afterwards, we run mostly in shaded areas until we return to the settlement.
Our trail running column is supported by Dockyard. The route is recommended by the legendary Csaba Németh, Hungary's most successful active trail runner.
Author’s recommendation
- There is no shade in the first two steeply ascending kilometers of the route, so bring a hat in summer! In return, on this section, two drinking fountains and at the top a spring are waiting for us.

Detailed Route Description
Starting from the Badacsony railway station, we enter the park and turn onto the K▲ marking, then at the top of Park street, turn left onto Római Street. We run to the intersection with Kisfaludy Street, where there is a blue water fountain, and turning right there, we start a long, steadily ascending path on the left sidewalk among the vineyards. Where the sidewalk ends, we cross to the newly established decorative water pipe walking path on the right side, where there is a drinking fountain at the top. At the junction, we turn left, then slightly higher turn right towards the Kisfaludy house. We pass between the iconic Szegedy Róza memorial house, which served as a filming location for the 1954 movie Liliomfi, and the famous Kisfaludy house, where we can refresh with water from the Kisfaludy spring. Still on the K▲ marking, we climb the stairs at the parking base to Rózsakő – where according to legend, Sándor Kisfaludy and Róza Szegedy liked to sit. From the rest area built around the famous stone, we can proudly overlook the route we've run so far alongside the wonderful panorama.
From Rózsakő, we head west on the P marking toward the Bujdosók stairs, still on a continuously ascending, narrow path, which is part of the Fire Ring educational trail with signage along the route. Farther on, the path widens into a double-track dirt road, then skirts the hill to the uppermost houses where it temporarily turns to asphalt – this is Rodostói út. At the end of this section, where we can already see Szigliget to the west, Rodostói út branches off to the left, and we continue to the right on the P marking. Initially, the single-track path is very rocky, so run cautiously – good news is that from here we run almost flat for two kilometers, so let's make good use of that.
A little farther, we cross the Bujdosók stairs, then run briefly on asphalt in front of the Rodostó tourist house. At the next junction, we turn right again at the P marking toward Bányaudvarok and Kőkapu. We continuously bypass the basalt wall rising to the right at various distances, then reach a rest area built under the wall. Not long after, an open panoramic section follows with a lovely view westward to Szigliget. After a right turn, we look northwest with Badacsonytördemic and Szent György hill as main features, while Tapolca appears in the distance. Attention: the path is rocky; don’t focus only on the panorama!
After the entrance to the former Tördemici basalt quarry, the path becomes more comfortable and easier to run until the large junction at the northern peak of the hill. But here the good times end: we sharply turn right and start ascending on the K marking to climb 120 meters of elevation over 600 meters distance to the summit. The steeply ascending, rocky single-track path soon narrows into a small canyon at the fifth board of the Fire Ring educational trail, where it’s worth walking on the low retaining wall curb made of concrete. If it’s covered or swept by basalt boulders fallen from above and forced into the ditch, there will be no running but very cautious stepping, as thick leaf litter likely hides the rocky ground underneath from view. Higher up, the path and canyon widen and although the curve flattens, we continuously climb. At a Y-junction, we turn left, still following the K marking on comfortable ground, then at a T-junction turn left to reach the highest point of our run just 150 meters away. At the Kisfaludy lookout's modern structure, vaguely resembling a reed hut, we are rewarded with a perfect 360-degree panorama rising above the vegetation.
We begin descending on the K marking on a gently sloping, wide, but rocky and straight forest path, at the bottom of which we find a small stone-built rain shelter. Here we turn left toward the Hertelendy memorial and Rózsakő, still descending comfortably on the K marking. Further down, we arrive at the romantically located memorial and the Páholykő lookout, from whose flat rocks there is a very beautiful view of Balaton toward Badacsonyörs and Ábrahámhegy. From here we descend further on the K▲ marking along a long rocky staircase until at the junction before the bottom of the stairs we sharply turn left onto the P marking.
This steep mountainside leads through a narrow, single-track path that is not only rocky but often tilts to the right, so proceed very cautiously. It meanders quite extensively in an exposed way, then at a Y-junction we turn right and continue on the P● marking. A section bordered by pine forests with soft soil follows, at the end of which we reach the first vineyard parcel with basalt retaining walls. At the houses, the path turns perpendicularly left and descends steeply and rockily. After another exposed section with side rockslides, we reach the junction where turning left, making a 50-meter uphill detour, we arrive at the Klastromkúti rest area. Here the memorial place of John Paul II and the fresh water of the Klastrom spring await us. Returning to the junction, we continue on the S marking first over a staircase section, then on a comfortable, wide, single-track path.
From this point, staying on the S marking, crossing several vineyard asphalt roads, sometimes on wider, sometimes narrower paths, we descend almost straight into Badacsonytomaj, just above the Saint Imre Church, to Nagykör út. At the bottom, we turn right onto Erdős street, run between the two lower parts of the cemetery, then at the first opportunity turn left continuing on Palackozó street. At the bottom, we turn right onto Római út, then left at the third opportunity descending via Strand street to Park street, where turning right brings us back to the railway station.
