"VIA REGIA" is the name of the oldest and longest land connection between the regions of Eastern and Western Europe. The route, today recognized as the "Cultural Route of the Council of Europe," is 4,500 km long and has a history of more than 2000 years, crossing eight European countries. An international network around the VIA REGIA was established as a cultural route, which uses the potential of the route as a symbol of unity and peaceful coexistence in Europe.

A newly designated hiking trail within a narrow corridor along the VIA REGIA makes the cultural route accessible and experiencable for locals and guests in the Saarpfalz district. The VIA REGIA runs through the region over almost 40 km and is divided into four stages. Each stage is thematically focused on a different aspect related to the VIA REGIA, the Saarpfalz district, and its European efforts.

The first stage from Bechhofen to Homburg focuses on processing the European conflicts of the last century and the importance of good relations between countries for peaceful coexistence in Europe.

The second stage leads from Homburg to Kirkel and is dedicated to the theme "Europe creates cohesion." The core of this stage is the long-standing Saarpfalz partnerships, which are an essential part of the Saarpfalz district as a "European and open-minded" district.

The motto of the third stage "Europe protects values" draws attention, at the individual stops between Kirkel and Hassel, to the added value the European Union brings to each citizen.

The fourth and final stage of the VIA REGIA in the Saarpfalz district connects historical context with current topics and shows "Europe writes the future."
