Timber Rafting Experience Path Legelbachtal (medium route) 8.4 km
Touristinformation Tal viTal - Verbandsgemeinde Lambrecht (Pfalz) Verified partner
On the Legelbach in the Elmsteiner Tal lies one of the most important and best-preserved examples of a small timber rafting stream, which flows into the Speyerbach. Have fun discovering it.
Timber transport via waterways was the most important economic sector in the area. The sophisticated timber rafting system can be hiked and experienced here. During the Bavarian era, all streams were replanned, although timber rafting had existed since the Middle Ages. From around 1820, the facilities were built from sandstone, which is why they are still preserved today. Most of the dry-laid stone blocks are so well worked and set that they are often still intact after 200 years.
Only with the railway, such as the Elmsteiner Kuckucksbähnel, did timber rafting lose its significance from 1905 onwards. Before that, it supplied the timber-poor Rhine plain in times of timber shortage and provided people here with wages and livelihood. Elmstein experienced an economic upswing.
The accompanying path was laid out in three circles so that everyone can experience the timber rafting creek according to their condition. The "Rock King" accompanies the route in the form of an audio tour (the app for this - Trifterlebnis Legelbach - please download at home, as there is unfortunately no reception in the Legelbachtal) and tells about his hard work as a timber rafter.
UFFBASSE! - Campaign for considerate coexistence in nature
- Fire & Smoking - Making fire, smoking, and grilling are strictly prohibited in the forest! This is the only way to avoid fires and thus major damage to nature and wildlife.
- Be considerate - Always behave thoughtfully, friendly, and considerately towards everyone you meet on the way.
- Nature conservation - Stay on designated paths and avoid unnecessary noise when you are in nature. Leave the forest by dusk at the latest to avoid disturbing the rhythm of nocturnal animals.
- Picnic & Litter - Take a rubbish bag with you and carry your waste back home. Use only the furnished rest areas for breaks and picnics.
- Leash dogs - Please keep your dog on a leash at all times. Other visitors and animals will thank you.

Safety information
General information:
Especially in autumn, be aware that fallen leaves on the ground can conceal unevenness, roots, stones, or holes in the path. After thunderstorms or heavy rain, trees may still fall or branches may break. On natural paths, you might encounter muddy and slippery sections depending on weather conditions. Not all rocks or ravines are secured with ropes or railings. Surefootedness is required in places. You should expect such path impairments when hiking. If you encounter sections that seem impassable to you, you should avoid them.
NOTE:
We strive to announce all closures caused by forestry work or hunting societies on this platform. Nevertheless, there are situations where hiking paths are closed and we were perhaps not informed. If you unexpectedly encounter a closure or detour, please follow the instructions for your own safety.
The paths are sometimes very narrow, so surefootedness is advisable.
Tips and suggestions
The audio file can be downloaded here: https://gfcc.de/trifterlebnis/index.html
Please download it beforehand, as reception in Elmsteiner Tal is poor.
Please note: The timber rafting experience path is not suitable for strollers.
Roadbook
Just some information upfront. The route starts at the parking lot with information board 2. Those who want to start at information board 1 must cross the country road (L499) via a small path from the parking lot. Once there, you can see an old information board about the timber rafting experience. We cross the small bridge and turn left onto the path. Information board 1 is located there (approx. 150m). Then you return to the hiking parking lot and information board 2.
We start our hike from the hiking parking lot "Alte Schmelz". From the parking lot, you can already see information board 3. Then you go up a few sandstone steps, where the path leads us past the Altschmelzklause and information board 4. We continue along the "large Legelbach", past information boards 5 and 6. Under a shelter area (shortly before information board 7), the path goes steeply uphill to the right. We follow the path, which leads us along the slope above until we reach the road down below. We go right, first on asphalt, along the small Legelbach and at the fork in the path to the left to the Trockentalklause (information board 11). At the hut (not managed), the path leads left past it to the spring and then rather abruptly up the mountain to a forest road. Here you go briefly left and then follow the right forest road further uphill. At the T-junction, go right and at the fork left to the Nibelungenhaus. This house is privately owned by the Ludwigshafen Nibelungen Association.
With the Nibelungenhaus in view, the left path leads back into the Legelbachtal. At the next fork, go right and at the next path junction, follow the path to the left. This leads over the old quarry directly to the L504 and where the middle and large rounds meet at the Ludwigsklause.
Then continue downstream. Once again near the road, a forestry road first goes right and then shortly afterward curves left to continue uphill. The small effort is more than rewarded with a view of the Gandertklause (information board 13). This is located a little above the charcoal burner’s hut (tipi). A resting place with tables and benches also invites you to linger.
Behind you is a small path opposite the facility that mystically leads back into the valley. When you see the road again, a small path leads right to the Johannis spring (information board 14), a sensitive spring biotope, and further until you must cross the road again diagonally downstream to reach the Nibelungenfelsen (*). A rest is also recommended here. Around the rock, the path continues back to the starting point. On this 1 km section, the road must be crossed downstream again, and shortly after, follow the entrance path where information board 8 is located to the Altschmelzklause.
