Nibelungenheim Waldhausgemeinschaft e.V. Ludwigshafen

The Nibelungenheim was built between 1927 and 1934 by a group of young people from Ludwigshafen. They called themselves "Nibelungengefolgschaft Pfälzer Wandervögel" and in their romantic striving for a simple life in a community based on friendship and the joy of hiking through nature, they stood in the tradition of the "Wandervogel", a group of the youth movement that had emerged around 1900. With the plan for their own country home in the middle of the forest, they wanted to fulfil their wish for a permanent accommodation for their trips and a permanent centre for their community.

Here, on a historic site, on the foundation walls of the former Breitscheid hunting lodge of Count Palatine Johann Casimir von Pfalz-Lautern (1543 - 1592), better known as the "Hunter from the Electoral Palatinate", they built this house under their own steam in seven years of painstaking work and with the most meagre of resources.

During the Nazi regime, all non-party youth organisations were disbanded and the house was temporarily requisitioned by the Hitler Youth and the Labour Front. After the Second World War, it was used as a shelter for forest workers, among other things.

Since 1950, it has once again served the members of the newly founded group "Nibelungenheim Waldhausgemeinschaft e.V." as a hiking base and as a club and holiday home. Unfortunately, we are unable to offer any refreshment facilities. We ask for your understanding and wish you a pleasant hike in our beautiful Palatinate Forest.

The Nibelungenheim can only be visited from the outside. It is owned by Nibelungenheim Waldhausgemeinschaft e.V.
