Following in the footsteps of Hans Jakob Christoffel von Grimmelshausen, we hike from the Grimmelshausen town of Renchen along the Grimmelshausen circular trail through the foothills of the Renchtal valley. Along the way, there are magnificent views of the Hornisgrinde, the Rhine plain and the Vosges mountains.
The town of Renchen is located in the northern Black Forest at the exit of the Renchtal valley into the Upper Rhine Plain.
The municipality became famous during the Thirty Years' War thanks to its mayor Hans Jakob Christoffel von Grimmelshausen. He was not so much known for his official activities. Rather, he occupied himself as a writer and undertook excursions into the surrounding area, which flowed into his main work "Der abenteuerliche Simplicissimus Teutsch", published in 1668/69. In this bestseller, which was already a bestseller at the time, his character Simplicius Simplicissimus describes his life during the war in a satirical manner. In addition to the turmoil of the war, he also describes the magnificent view from the Mooskopf, which became increasingly overgrown in the last century - only hurricane Lothar restored it to its former state. Since then, a monument has been erected there in memory of the writer. Another one was erected in 1970 in honor of "The excellent depictor of the Mummelsee" at the Mummelsee.
Today, the town of Grimmelshausen bears his name and honors him with the Grimmelshausen monument at his grave site. The "Jäger von Soest" town hall fountain and the Fabeltierbrunnen fountain are dedicated to his hero Simplicius. The Simplicissimus House, Germany's first "museum of literary reception history", is dedicated to the memory of the greatest poet of the Baroque era. The tradition of his satirical literature is continued today by the political-satirical weekly magazine "Simplicissimus".
The poet's places of activity can also be visited on the Grimmelshausen circular trail laid out by the Renchen Black Forest Association. It is approx. 18 km long and runs from Renchen to Oberkirch and back again. The only downside: lots of asphalt!
Author’s recommendation
The hike is particularly attractive in spring when the fruit and vines are in bloom. A visit to the Grimmelshausen Museum in Renchen is a great way to round off the walk.

Roadbook
If you are traveling by train, follow the yellow diamond from the signpost "Renchen Bahnhof (144 m)" to the "Rathaus".
This is where the hike begins. We walk along the main road in a northerly direction and turn right into Kappelstraße. We walk out of town, always following the "Grimmelshausenrundweg" signpost, until we reach the "Kappeler Weg" signpost. Continue along the path that turns half right towards "Friedhof Ulm". Once there, turn left into Ulmhardtstraße. Please note: the L 88 country road must be crossed.
The route now leads into the Ulm district of Kaier, where we take the left-hand path straight ahead at the "Neuziger Kreuz" fork. Passing the "Kolbenhalde", we walk uphill into the forest and on to the "Bildstöckleplatz". From there, continue to the right to the "Kutzenstein" geotope and via the "Scherd" and the "Waldulmer Rotweinweg" to the "Langhalde" signpost. Once there, we keep to the right and reach the "Waldköpfle-Hütte" in a few minutes.
Passing the hut on the right, we walk between forest and vineyards, with enchanting views of the Rhine plain. Above the village of Haslach, we descend to the next intermediate destination "Waldeck". Here we turn left towards "Ulm Rathaus" and then follow Ullenburgstraße to the Ulm community hall. Turn left up Säbelstraße and out of the village to the next signpost "Am Auerrain" at the Erlach cemetery. The fruit nature trail also runs here and the hike ends with a walk through the magnificent fruit landscape and Grimmelshausen Park to the starting and finishing point of this hike, the "Renchen Town Hall".
