While ski tourers populate the piste on the neighboring mountain of Alpspitz, this route is very quiet. The view of the Ammergau Alps, the Zugspitze, and the Tannheimer mountains is nonetheless beautiful. Definitely a route worth doing with snowshoes.

Depending on snow conditions, the route takes about 4.5-6 hours without breaks.

The route follows the summer path from Vilstalsäge up through partly open terrain to the Gundhütte, which invites a pause in summer and winter depending on opening hours. The Gundhütte lies nicely in a high valley at 1180 m and is mostly hiked by people from Röfleuten and the Röfleuterberg. However, with snowshoes, the steeper but shorter path from Vilstalsäge is recommended.

Then it continues easily through wooded terrain with open sections crossing forest roads. The higher you climb, the more the view opens first to the west and finally at the height of the Fichtelhütte to a stunning panorama from east to west.

Once again, all strength must be mobilized on the steepest and most difficult part of the ascent along the southeast ridge, where it is important to find compact snow and avoid the drifted deep snow.

At the summit, the summit pavilion invites to a cozy rest, as it is sheltered from the weather and open only to the east. Due to the coniferous trees at the summit area of the Edelberg, the view is less clear than on the summit slope.

The view floats from the wooden summit cross over to the lower Alpspitz with the Sportheim Böck, where alpine skiers are active in winter during ski operations.

    Author’s recommendation

Rest options at the Gundhütte (partly operated in winter) and at the summit pavilion; after the descent, you can also reward yourself in the guest room of the Vilstalsäge inn (observe opening hours).

    Roadbook

From the roaring Vilstal (900 m), the route follows well-marked paths first through open sparse terrain with young forest, then through coniferous forest up to the Gundhütte at 1180 m, which is partly operated in summer and winter. From there, crossing a forest road in steep switchbacks to the open summit slope within sight of the Fichtelhütte (1538 m). Following the often wind-scoured south to southeast ridge to the partly wooded, partly open summit of the Edelberg (1624 m), where a pavilion provides a good resting place and shelter even in winter, with space for 6-8 people. Perfect for a hearty summit snack. Then back down the same way into the Vilstal.

    Equipment

Change of clothes, weather protection, good footwear, and snowshoes; in safe conditions, avalanche equipment may not be necessary, but always carry an avalanche transceiver if in doubt. Bring sufficient food and drinks. Winter poles save energy when sinking deeply. Do not calculate the route too short in heavy snow. If you break trail yourself, plan about 1 hour longer in total.
