The Serra Oropa Path can be done in four short stages with increasing difficulty:
- Santhià-Roppolo: 16.5 km, 230 m ascent;
- Roppolo-Sala Biellese: 17.4 km, 400 m ascent;
- Sala Biellese-Santuario di Graglia: 16.1 km, 550 m ascent;
- Santuario di Graglia-Santuario di Oropa: 15.1 km, 800 m ascent.
More experienced and trained walkers can also tackle it in three stages, staying overnight in Magnano and at the Santuario di Graglia. In this case, the distances and ascents are greater:
- Santhià-Magnano: 25.9 km, 486 m ascent;
- Magnano-Santuario di Graglia: 20.5 km, 606 m ascent;
- Santuario di Graglia-Santuario di Oropa: 15.1 km, 800 m ascent.
In the last stage, there are two alternatives: the main route ascends to Oropa along path D1, very beautiful but relatively challenging, especially in case of heavy rain. Alternatively, once near the village of Favaro, you can take the less demanding path ascending to Oropa along the old disused tramway track.
Once you reach Oropa, you can return to Santhià by bus and train (see useful info section) or rent an e-bike and return to the starting point along the beautiful Oropa Cycle Route.
The path is fully marked, with yellow and black trail markers and painted yellow arrows, from Santhià station to the Sanctuary of Oropa.

Public transport
By train
The simplest and most sustainable way to reach Santhià is definitely by train. Santhià is located on the Milan-Turin railway line; trains arrive every hour from Milan Central Station in 1h05′ and from Turin Porta Susa in 30′. The Oropa Path starts right from the railway station. Train info and schedules: www.trenitalia.it
By bus
The Flixbus stop in Santhià is near the A4 motorway tollbooth, from where you can easily reach the Oropa Path in 30 minutes on foot. Bus info and schedules: www.flixbus.it.
By car
Santhià is located on the A4 Milan-Turin motorway, one hour by car from Milan, 30 minutes from Turin. You can leave your car near the Santhià railway station, where there are several free parking lots, usually without issues for leaving the car for a few days. For example, you can park on Via Tagliamento, where most parking spots do not require a parking disc, or in the lot near the Coop on Via Ferraris. If you prefer a guarded parking, you can contact the Belotti garage, always near the Santhià station, which offers a special price for Oropa Path travelers of €7/day for covered parking (tel. 0161 94335).
Connections along the route
The stopover points and some intermediate locations are connected to Biella by ATAP buses, schedules and info on www.atapspa.it.
Note: service is suspended on New Year's Day (January 1), Labor Day (May 1), and Christmas (December 25). All schedules may be subject to changes; therefore, we recommend checking the website www.atapspa.it and/or contacting ATAP.
Attention: generally on Sundays only the Sanctuary of Oropa – Biella connection operates, not the connections to stopover points of the Path.
How to return from the Sanctuary of Oropa
The Sanctuary of Oropa is connected to Biella San Paolo railway station by an urban bus that runs approximately every 2 hours. Tickets can be purchased at the Sanctuary reception or at tobacconists along the route. Schedules and info at www.atapspa.it.
Note: service suspension applies on New Year's Day (January 1), Labor Day (May 1), and Christmas (December 25). All schedules may vary; please check www.atapspa.it and/or contact ATAP at 800912716 (Monday to Friday from 9:00 to 18:00).
Alternatively, to return from Oropa to Santhià you can rent a muscle bike or an electric-assist bike.
