Der riesige Gebäudekomplex entstand wahrscheinlich an der Stelle einer eines vorchristlichen Kultusortes. Verehrt wird eine schwarze Madonna aus dem 14. Jahrhundert, die in der Basilica Antica aufbewahrt wird.
Im 17. Jahrhundert wurde ein Heiliger Berg angelegt. Durch kleine Löcher in den mit Holz vergitterten Fenstern der Kapellen können die Pilger Szenen auf dem Marienleben sowie andere Bibelthemen sehen. Zuammen mit 8 weiteren Sacri Monti gehört er seit 2003 zum UNESCO Weltkulturerbe.
