Palatine Way of St. James - South route: Rülzheim - Sondernheim

"I'm off then…" Not only since Harpe Kerkeling have people been setting out for Santiago de Compostela in Spain, the city of Saint James.

A part of the widespread European network of historic pilgrimage routes also crosses our collective municipality Rülzheim. A white shell on a blue background marks the route of the Way of Saint James, which runs through Rülzheim and Hördt. In the Middle Ages, people sought spiritual salvation and indulgence from sins; today's pilgrims have rather spiritual, religious, cultural, and sporting motives.

The still well-preserved monastery wall of the Augustinian canons’ foundation

in Hördt is an outstanding example of medieval architectural culture along the route. In the courtyard of the town hall today, a shell embedded in the ground points to the historic site. The statue of St. Nepomuk near the bridge on the Klingenbach is a remnant of the vanished Augustinian canon monastery and was approximately the center of the former monastery complex.

• Fire & Smoking - lighting fires, smoking, and grilling in the forest are strictly forbidden and must be avoided! Fires and thus great damage to nature and wildlife can only be prevented this way.
• Be considerate on the way - always behave thoughtfully, kindly, and considerately towards everyone you meet.
• Nature conservation - stay on the designated paths and avoid unnecessary noise when you are in nature. Leave the forest at dusk at the latest to avoid disturbing the rhythm of nocturnal animals.
• Picnic & waste - remember to take a trash bag with you and take your waste back home. Use only the furnished rest areas for breaks and picnics.
• Leash dogs - please always keep your dog on a leash. Other visitors and animals will thank you.
