Marienpilgerweg 8th stage: Feistritz/Gail - Watschig
8th Day Stage
Feistritz a. d. Gail - Watschig
Length: 28.7 km
Walking time: 7 hours
The stage is relatively long but runs completely flat along the Gail. Here you can always decide whether to walk on the dam crest or the parallel gravel road (Carnic bike path R 3 or Gail bike path). Numerous water birds live in this area, and besides wild ducks and herons, cormorants can occasionally be observed. Along the way, you also have the chance to bathe your tired feet in the cold river water whenever you feel like it. Wonderful! The stage is lined with many sacred buildings. The cultural-historical and spiritual highlight of the day is undoubtedly the visit to the Maria im Graben pilgrimage church in Vorderberg. Those receptive to it will feel the power emanating from this place. The key for the church is available from the Gugg family at house no. 50 to the right of the old cemetery. The dining options on this stage are very limited; the Gasthof Ortsburg in Vorderberg offers a suitable stopover.

Roadbook
Starting from the village fountain by the old lime tree in the center of Feistritz, walk the first 3.5 km along the road towards Vorderberg. Eventually, leave this to the right and reach the Gail via a gravel path, following its course along the Gail bike path R 3 to Vorderberg (Feistritz a. d. Gail - Vorderberg: 8 km), where you arrive after about 2 hours. Now turn into the village, cross the Vorderberg Wildbach, and walk along it for another 1 km to the branch church Our Lady in the Trench, better known as the Maria im Graben pilgrimage church. From the church, retrace your steps a little and turn half-left at the junction to the Dolinza Alm near the farmhouse onto hiking trail No. 13, along which you walk by the edge of the forest to Nampolach (Maria im Graben - Nampolach: 5 km). Here you turn again towards the Gail and march south of the river westwards to Möderndorf (Nampolach - Möderndorf: 9.5 km). From the northern Gail shore, the places Dellach, Mellweg, Brugg, Mellach, and Micheldorf face you. Those who want to make a detour can cross the Gail northwards at one of the many crossings. Shortly before Möderndorf, the path turns left, and you walk past the farm vulgo Luschau to Eggeralm Street, turning right to cross Möderndorf along the road to the north. Once back at the Gail, keep left and continue for only one more hour along the southern riverbank to Watschig (Möderndorf - Watschig: 4.5 km).
